What is it?
  • A recently recognized syndrome.
  • Learners reverse letters and numbers
  • They see mirror images of characters (ex. bor
    d)
  • They cant remember sequences
  • People with dyslexia have trouble with
    processing, perceptual, and attention/
    concentration

What causes Dyslexia?
  • Developmental Dyslexia
  • A neurological disorder which interferes with the
    acquisition of language.
  • Congenital and developmental traits
  • Acquired Dyslexia
  • Thought to be brought about by early ear
    infections which cause hearing loss (acquired
    dyslexia)
  • A health related disorder dealing with vision

Who has it?
  • More commonly found in men than in women 31 to
    51
  • Found in all groups of people regardless of age,
    race, or income
  • People with vision problems.
  • Those who are late talkers as babies are 60
    more likely to have dyslexia.

Some Stats
  • 10 of the US population have dyslexia.
  • 80 of people with learning disabilities have
    dyslexia.
  • Only 5 of dyslexics are ever diagnosed.
  • Left handed people are more likely to suffer from
    dyslexia

Dyslexia and Math
  • Dyslexic students have trouble with sequencing.
    Have trouble getting numbers in the correct order
    and reversing the order.
  • Multiplication and division are the most
    difficult for the child to master

Teaching those with dyslexia
  • Use multi-sensory teaching.
  • Incorporate games into your lessons.
  • Individualize your worksheets to help those with
    dyslexia.
  • Relate word problems to things in their lives
    (will give them visualization)
  • Teach in small steps dont move on until the
    student is ready.
  • Teach them how to talk through a problem.

Warning Signs
  • If there is a family history of learning
    problems.
  • Difficulties in spelling.
  • Confusion over left and right.
  • Writing letters or numbers backwards.
  • Difficulties with math(s)
  • Difficulties with organizing.
  • Difficulties following 2 or 3 step instructions
  • Slow reading
  • Unable to recall numbers in proper order (ex.
    Phone numbers)
  • Hesitant speech
  • Poor ability finding way around or finding car in
    parking lot OR excellent ability to find way
    around
