  • J. Rex Greer, Inventor/President
  • Presentation at Businesses for the Bay
  • January 30, 2006

3
Why Do Truckers Idle?Four Common Scenarios
  • Maintain engine warmth in freezing conditions.
  • Charge batteries and run power Inverters for
    110VAC appliances.
  • Maintain cab/sleeper comfort HEAT in the winter
    months.
  • Maintain cab/sleeper comfort AIR CONDITIONING in
    the summer months.

4
When Do Truckers Idle?
  • During federally mandated rest periods (10 Hours
    per Day).
  • Waiting to load or unload.
  • At scales and ports-of-entry.
  • Prevent cold starts or warm-up engine after cold
    start.

5
What are the effects of Idling?
  • High horsepower engines use 0.8 to 1.5 gallons of
    fuel per hour.
  • Decreased oil life.
  • Increased maintenance and overhaul costs.
  • Increased exhaust emissions.
  • Reduced profit margins for the owner.

6
What are the Available Options?
  • Advanced Truck Stop Electrification (ATSE).
  • Truck Stop Electrification (TSE).
  • Generator Sets (GenSet) and AC powered
    appliances.
  • Battery powered solutions.
  • Legislation Let em suffer!
  • Auxiliary Power Units (APU).

7
Definition Auxiliary Power Unit
  • An Auxiliary Power Unit is a single piece of
equipment that provides coverage for the four
    common idling scenarios.
  • Also provides backup air conditioning and
charging systems in case of certain truck system
    failures.
  • Fully integrates with on-board equipment.

8
What Is Pony Pack, Inc.?
  • Pony Pack manufactures Auxiliary Power Units in
Albuquerque, NM and markets them for
    over-the-road trucks.

9
The Pony Pack Philosophy
  • Use as much of the on-board existing equipment as
possible to minimize weight and maximize space
    savings.
  • Utilize service parts that are widely available
    through existing supply lines.
  • Run everything except the drive shaft.
  • Use an inverter if the driver needs 110 volt
    power.

11
Pony Pack and Research
  • Clean Cities grant for idle reduction data
    acquisition. (www.eere.energy.gov/cleancities/sep_
    04_idle.html)
  • Provide support for Smart Way Transport kickoff
with EPA and Oakridge National Lab.
  • Provide support for UC Davis Project.
  • Work with the Navy, Border Patrol, and Army.

12
Pony Pack Mounting
  • Steel frame mounts to available 24 inch section
    of truck frame.
  • Aluminum base plate mounts to steel frame.
  • Base plate is isolated from steel frame via four
    rubber mounts.
  • Rubber Isolation reduces noise and vibration in
    the cab/sleeper.

13
Pony Pack Connections
  • At the unit
  • Coolant supply.
  • Coolant feed.
  • A/C suction.
  • A/C Pressure.
  • Battery voltage and ground.
  • Wiring to control panel.
  • Fuel Supply.

14
Pony Pack Connections
  • In the engine compartment
  • Cab heat pump.
  • Engine cooling system.
  • Existing A/C system
  • Shunt valve.
  • Suction tee.

15
Pony Pack Connections
  • In the truck
  • Control Panel.
  • Wires run behind dash and trim.

16
Pony Pack Specifications
  • 10.8 HP Kubota Diesel engine.
  • Two cylinders.
  • Uses same fuel as truck engine
  • Low sulfur fuels reduce our emissions.
  • Urea additives reduce our emissions also.
  • Can run bio-diesel as well.
  • 0.2 gallons per hour fuel consumption.
  • Reduced emissions compared to truck engine.

17
Pony Pack Specifications
  • Common parts
  • A/C compressor and alternator fit current Ford
    Powerstroke Pickup trucks.
  • Modine condenser and radiator.
  • Gates belts and hoses.
  • Standard oil and fuel filters we supply cross
    reference list to most manufacturers.
  • Permanent washable air cleaner with spare element
    and cleaning kit.

18
Pony Pack Operation
  • The Pony Pack provides
  • Cab and sleeper heating as if the truck were
    running.
  • Cab and sleeper air conditioning as if the truck
    were running.
  • Engine warming.
  • 110 amps of DC power for battery charging and
    accessory operation.

19
Pony Pack Operation
  • The operator uses the trucks heating,
    ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC)
    controls.
  • Can maintain the same comfort level as if the
    truck were running.
  • Can add a voltage inverter to supply 110 VAC
    accessories.

20
Pony Pack/Operator Interface
21
Pony Pack Benefits
  • Dramatically reduced emissions compared to idling
    high HP engine.
  • Fuel savings Unit pays for itself within 12
    18 months of operation.
  • Reduced Maintenance costs on truck engine.
  • No vibration and less noise.
  • On truck - dont have to drive around two or
three hours hunting hose, plug-in, battery
    charger, or motel.

22
Less Obvious Benefits
  • Extended engine life.
  • Longer oil-change intervals and less oil in the
    waste stream.
  • Longer interval between overhauls.
  • Compliance with idling regulations.
  • Spare alternator and A/C system.
  • Lower driver turn over rate.
  • Conserve scarce natural resources.
