Title: CIVIL ENGINEERING

1
CIVIL ENGINEERING
Environmental
Geotechnical
Geotechnical Engineering focuses on soil
properties, soil mechanics, embankments, deep and
shallow foundations, retaining walls, and soil
dynamics.
Environmental Engineers deal with the treatment
and management of chemical/biological waste, the
purification of water and air, and the
remediation of hazardous sites.
  • Program Educational Objectives in the
    Department of Civil Engineering are
  • To provide students with the latest social,
    mathematical, scientific and engineering
educational experiences required to assess needs,
    define problems, evaluate alternatives, propose
    appropriate solutions and implement designs.
  • To provide students with the social science and
    management educational experiences required to
    effectively work in teams, communicate
recommendations and manage the implementation of
    their work products.
  • To promote concern for environmental, societal
    and global ramifications of engineering
solutions, the value of the profession and its
ethics, the opportunities provided by graduate
studies and professional licensure, and the
    necessity of life-long learning.
  • To provide the educational experience that will
prepare students for the engineering workplace
    and for graduate studies.
  • To graduate students who will enter the Civil
    Engineering profession, take on progressively
more responsible work, continually learn and
    master evolving methodologies, and attain
leadership roles in their careers and in their
    profession.

Structural
Transportation
The main functions of structural engineering are
the analysis, investigation, and design of
structural components and systems that can
withstand forces such as wind and seismic
activity.
Moving people and goods in an efficient and safe
manner is the primary concern of Transportation
Engineering. This work involves the design,
construction, and maintenance of infrastructure
such as streets, highways, railway systems,
ports, airports, and mass transit systems.
Student Organizations At UNC-Charlotte, Civil
Engineering is not just a major, its a family.

The PhD program in Infrastructure and
Environmental Systems offers interdisciplinary
study into the interaction of the natural world
and the built environment. PhD candidates develop
the analytical and conceptual skills necessary to
manage that complex interface. The INES PhD
program emphasizes the underlying effects of
environmental science on the design and
management of infrastructure, and vice versa.
In the INES PhD program, students take core
courses, focus area elective courses, directed
studies and dissertation credits.  Each student
will focus on one of three areas design,
science, or management.
