  • Environmental external noises or other senses
    becoming more important
  • Physiological time to think other thoughts
    while listening
  • Psychological preconceived ideas, moods,
    assumptions, memories, past experiences, hopes

Attitude for Good Listening
  • Dont ask questions/attempt to listen when ---
  • Angry want to punish
  • Judgmental or want to give advice
  • In a hurry do not have time to listen

Good Listening Behaviors
  • Stop talking
  • Lessen distractions
  • Focus on the speaker
  • Be neutral
  • Reflect on the message
  • Identify main ideas and central themes
  • Judge content of message, not the delivery
  • Use paraphrasing, note-taking, questions
  • Dont overreact
  • Give feedback
  • Listen for the intent

    habits. Indicate in your journal which ten habits
    you find most annoying. Also reflect on which
    habits you may possess. What can you do to shake
    these irritating listening habits?
