Title: Introduction to the Proposal Development System PDS

1
Introduction to the Proposal Development System
(PDS) November 16, 2006
2
Proposal Development System (PDS)
  • Washington Universitys system, PDS, will
be utilized to create the administrative
components (Cover Page, Budget, Key Personnel,
Compliance, etc.) of a grant application
REGARDLESS of the methodology used to submit the
    grant application.

3
Ways to Submit a Grant Application
  • Paper (Manual)
  • PureEdge (P2S)
  • System-to-System (S2S)

4
Ways to Submit a Grant Application (cont.)
  • Paper (Manual) Washington Universitys
Proposal Development System (PDS) is used to
create the budget. The administrative components
(including the budget) of the grant application
are manually (typed in) completed outside of PDS,
saved and printed out on paper. The Research
Plan is completed outside of PDS. When
completed, the Research Plan is saved and also
printed out on paper. The administrative
components are packaged with the Research Plan
    and submitted via express mail.

Ways to Submit a Grant Application (cont.)
  • PureEdge (P2S) Washington Universitys
Proposal Development System (PDS) is used to
create the budget. The administrative components
(including the budget) of the grant application
are manually (typed in) completed outside of PDS
and saved as a PureEdge file. The Research Plan
is also completed outside of PDS. When
completed, the Research Plan is uploaded as a PDF
attachment to the PureEdge file. The PureEdge
file is submitted to Grants.gov by Grants
Contracts via an upload using the internet.

6
Ways to Submit a Grant Application (cont.)
  • System-to-System (S2S) Washington
Universitys Proposal Development System (PDS) is
used to create the administrative components of
the grant application. The Research Plan is
completed outside of PDS. When completed, the
Research Plan is attached to the PDS document as
PDF attachment(s) and the grant application is
    transmitted to Grants.gov.

7
eSubmission Facts
  • PDS was developed in-house
  • PDS minimizes data entry, provides
    uniformity, and allows
  • DA/PI to submit (i.e. mail) the grant
    application
  • PDS went live 10/23/06
  • Washington University has successfully
    submitted (4) S2S grant applications (11/01)

8
eSubmission Facts (cont.)
  • PDS currently supports NIH NSF
applications utilizing the SF424 RR Family of
    Forms
  • R01s for February will be submitted S2S via
    PDS
  • Can still utilize PureEdge to eSubmit if
    necessary

Application flow after submission

    guideline for developing workflow
  • Who is responsible for what and when? Be
    specific!
  • Who is going to press/push the SUBMIT
    button?
  • Administrators are encouraged to go back to
    Department and discuss roles/functionality with
    faculty other support staff

11
Things to Think About! (cont.)

    the appropriate Administrative personnel
  • PDS training will be available in December
  • Training targeted for Faculty and/or Faculty
