CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • On the morning of August 29th, 2005 Hurricane
Katrina, a Category 3 Hurricane with winds of 125
mph, made landfall in New Orleans.
  • Katrinas eye actually passed about 50 miles east
    of New Orleans.

CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • A 25-foot storm surge into the Mississippi River
Gulf Outlet, known as "MRGO, destroyed the
    parish levees.
  • The storm left most of the parish flooded. Most
areas had between 5 and 12 feet of standing
    water.

  • Prior to Hurricane Katrina, St. Bernard Parish, a
community directly east of downtown New Orleans,
had a population of approximately 65,000 people.

5
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • Estimates as of February 12, 2006 declared 20,229
homes in St. Bernard Parish damaged or destroyed
    in the hurricane.

6
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • For more than two months after the storm, much of
the parish remained without proper services,
    including electricity, water, and sewage.

7
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • At the one-year anniversary after Katrina, only
about 10,000 of the Parishs residents had
    returned.

8
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • As of June 2008, less than half of the original
    65,000 residents had returned.

9
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • In March of 2008, six CIPA fellows participated
in a Spring Break Trip hosted by Women in Public
Policy (WIPP) and supported by CIPA.

10
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • During this trip, the fellows had the opportunity
to work on two houses being rebuilt by St.
    Bernard Project.
  • These fellows were the first group of volunteers
to stay in the Live St. Bernard home.

11
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • This year the CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
will provide even more opportunities for CIPA
fellows to make a difference in St. Bernard
    Parish.

12
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • These activities include
  • A New Orleans Discussion Group about the
    rebuilding process, with distinguished guest
speakers, held once a month this fall semester.

13
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • A consultancy with St. Bernard nonprofit agencies
as part of CIPAs Public Service Exchange (CRP
6790), taught by Linda Haas Manley in the spring
    semester.

14
CIPA-NOLA Professional Partnership
  • A week-long Spring Break Service Trip to St.
Bernard Parish to rebuild houses with St. Bernard
