3Gene Kellys Life
- Gene Kelly was born on August 23, 1912 in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. - Gene and his brother Fred began dancing at
amateur nights and were known as The Kelly
Brothers. - They watched several vaudeville acts where they
picked up new moves.
4Genes Move to New York and the Theatre
- 1st play Leave it to Me where he was an eskimo
- 2nd play Time of Your Life where he was Harry
the Hoofer - 3rd play Pal Joey This is where Gene caught
the eye of MGM Studios owner Louis B. Mayer

5Genes First Movie
- Instead of signing with MGM, Gene signed a 7 year
contract with Selznick Studios - The studio set him up with Judy Garland for the
1942 hit For Me and My Gal
6Gene is loaned to Columbia Studios, making Cover

- Biggest hit in 1954.
- Film First alter ego number where Gene dances
perfectly in synch with himself. - Meets Stanley Donen, long time friend and partner.
7Anchors Away (1945) began with a major
problem
- Gene had to teach Frank Sinatra how to dance,
practicing 8 weeks for 1 number with 73 takes. - Film First an 8 minute dance number combining
live action and animation - Won 5 Academy Awards

8The Pirate (1948)
- Gave full creative authority to those starring in
the movie - One of the most physically demanding movies in
Genes career. - 2nd movie with Judy Garland and 1st with the
famous Nicholas Brothers.
9On the Town (1949)
- Genes favorite film.
- Film First traveled to New York to film, making
it the first movie not created in the studio. - Includes a dream sequence, showing different
forms of dance, in particular, the American
Ballet.
10An American in Paris (1951)
- Nina Foch, while filming, got the chicken pox.
While she was sick, they created a 13 minute
ballet. - Won 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and a
special Honorary Award to Gene.
11Singin in the Rain (1952)
- Film First having that much rain inside the
studio - The water pressure around the average time
neighboring people got home from work would
disappear because so much water was used on the
set.

13Genes Final Days
Gene Kellys career was full of several
accomplishments. Through the years, Gene took
part in several other films. Unfortunately, on
February 2, 1996 after a series of strokes, Gene
Kelly passed away.
