Title: Eagle Preparation The Whole Package

1
Eagle Preparation The Whole Package
  • Adam Sullivan
  • Scoutmaster - Troop 479

2
What an Eagle is
  • Core requirements
  • Merit badges
  • Leadership
  • Eagle Project
  • Scout Law
  • Recognized achievement
  • Lifetime of recognition
  • Lifetime of expectations

3
Expectations
  • Skilled in field craft
  • At home in the outdoors
  • Can cope with crisis
  • Service oriented
  • Shows initiative seeks responsibility
  • Has leadership experience
  • In short
  • a young leader

4
This troops experience
  • Many Eagles
  • Early Eagles lose interest in the troop and miss
    the leadership development

5
Unfair to the Scout
  • If a Scout is promoted to Eagle, others will
expect more from him throughout life. If he
doesnt get the skills, development and
    leadership experience that meets those
    expectations
  • he is set up for failure.

6
Unprepared Eagles
  • An unprepared Eagle will not have a good
experience at his Eagle Board of Review.
  • The Board is not made up of moms and dads from
the troop. It is made up of prominent community
leaders. Complete strangers to the scout who can
    ask tough questions.
  • While the Scout may get a pass, he will be told
that he should have Been Prepared.
  • This troop has had Eagle candidates in tears over
    the experience

7
My Rules on Eagles
  • 15 years or older (necessary for university
    admission credit anyway)
  • Demonstrated maturity
  • Has mentored others. Leads by example.
  • Actually lives the Scout Law every day. All
words, including brave, courteous, and helpful.

8
Other Standards to Help Pave the Path
  • No more than 2 Eagle required Merit Badges from
the same counselor. At least 4 in a
    non-classroom environment.
  • Merit Badges are intended to get boys familiar
with working with adults they dont know who will
    have varying standards.
  • That is an important skill for a young man to
have going into his first job and/or higher ed.
  • This is a go forward requirement wont/cant
    make scouts re-do

9
Brave
  • 4 overnights without mom or dad before next rank
    past 1st Class.
  • We have great parent participation in this troop,
but we cant let that hinder our sons
development. This standard applies to me too.
  • If this is a big issue for your son, please talk
    to me and John Kordela.

10
Trustworthy
  • We need to eliminate the appearance of conflict
    of interest.
  • Dont sign off your sons requirements have a
trained ASM or the SM sign it off.

11
Helpful
  • I expect Star and Life scouts to take the
initiative in being helpful to others.
  • Not helpful when asked to be helpful without
    asking.
  • That means at home too. Especially so. It takes
10 consecutive days to form a habit, not one
    night a week.

12
Courteous
  • Manners arent in style, but they hold societies
    together.
  • Star and Life are expected to control their
    bodies and mouths.
  • Everyone is expected to think of others.
  • I will be on them. Please help.
