Biography
Andy Goldsworthy was born in 1956 in Cheshire,
England, and raised in Yorkshire. Throughout
his whole life only once was he taught how to
use a camera. It wasnt until 1989 that he
published his first book called Touching
North. His art has become very popular in the
U.K. Since the late 1970s, Andy has been
working with natural materials. He typically
uses twigs, thorns, mud, snow, icicles, brightly
colored flowers and leaves. Mostly, he only uses
his hands to create his very beautiful and
unique artwork. However, for the large pieces of
rocks and ice, he uses equipment. He has
traveled all over the world to build all of his
creations. Specifically in Britain, Europe,
America, Japan and Australia.

Why are his pictures famous? What is the style
they introduced, and the technique they made
famous?
Most of the pictures I have used in this
slideshow are famous because they are some of
the most difficult ones he has created. The
style introduced is repeating the shape and
pattern of the structures he creates. The
technique that was made famous was being able to
create all of these wonderful pieces with all
natural materials, and mainly only using his
hands to construct them.

What the critics said then and now
When he first started, he was rejected from many
colleges. After a few years, he got a B.A in Fine
Arts. Having no previous experience in art or
photography, he was just unacceptable. It
wasnt until he published his books, that he was
popular. I believe that now, people arent so
apt to criticize him or his artwork. I know
there are still a few people who think hes crazy
for doing having the career he does, but if he
didnt like it why would he continue building?

Why is Andys work so great?
Andy Goldsworthys work is so great because of
his unique technique in how he builds his
structures. The fact that he creates all of his
pieces with only natural materials is very
amazing to many people.
What do I think about Andys work?
My opinion of his work is that is wonderful and
beautiful I love the fact that he had the
patience to wait for things to freeze together,
as not to mess with mother nature. I am glad that
his work is famous because he should be credited
for all of his hard work.
