Food Poisoning
  • Any disease caused by the consumption of food or
    drink
  • Caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites
  • Causes vomiting and/or diarrhoea, fever, and
    abdominal pain
  • Usually treated with antibiotics

Heartburn
  • Heartburn is a pain behind the breast bone, often
    described as burning
  • Heartburn occurs when stomach acid rise up into
    the gullet (oesophagus)
  • can often be relieved by remedies for indigestion
    (Pepto Bismol)

Constipation
  • A person is constipated when fewer than 3 bowel
    actions happen in a week, or if there is often a
    need to strain to pass a stool
  • Usually caused by lack of fibre (roughage) in the
    diet
  • Treated with antacids which contain aluminium or
    calcium

Bowel Cancer
  • Develops because of defects in the genes of cells
    lining the bowel
  • Cancer develops when cells begin to multiply at
    an abnormal rate
  • A diet rich in fresh vegetables and fruit and
    plenty of fibre helps protect against bowel
    cancer

Ulcers
  • A ulcer is a sensitive, raw patch which forms a
    break in the lining of the stomach or the
    duodenum
  • Ulcers occur when the acid and pepsin break the
    defences and eat away at the lining of the
    stomach and duodenum
  • Can be caused be a germ called Helicobacter
    pylori
  • About one-third of ulcers heal by themselves
    within a month
