  • Prohibition- outlawed the production, sale, or
    use of alcohol.
  • Led to other problems
  • Casual attitude towards breaking the law
  • Gangsters (Capone in Chicago) made Millions and
    used that money to corrupt and control the
    cities.
  • Many had Bath tub distilleries in their homes and
    made bath tub gin.

Prohibition continued
  • Bootleggers- smugglers of illegal liquor
  • Speakeasies- secret clubs where booze was sold.
  • Usually needed a password to get in.
  • Prohibition agents hunted down illegal liquor and
    poured it into the streets.

  • New Opportunities for women
  • More went to college
  • More in the workplace (not always factories)
  • Right to vote- 19th Amendment- many voted with
    the man in their life.
  • Became more independent
  • Flappers- small group of women (cities) who
    shocked people with their short hair, short
    skirt, heavy make-up, drinking smoking, dancing

Urban Growth
  • After the war, we needed less food
  • People flooded to the cities
  • Suburbs also grew, cars helped this trend
  • Schools boomed. States passed laws that required
    children to be in school
  • Good economy allowed families to live without
    income from their children.

Fundamentalism- Literal interpretation of the
Bible
  • Scopes Trial- the teaching of evolution in
    schools????
  • Tennessee passed a law that said evolution could
    NOT be taught in schools.
  • John Scopes taught it anyway and was arrested
  • Trial pitting evolution against creation
  • All of U.S. was watching
  • Courts said the law was okay (no evolution)

  • The movement of African-Americans from the South
    to the big cities of the North.
  • Jobs were in the cities
  • Led to racial tensions
  • W.E.B. DuBois- A-A leader who created NAACP.
    Helped start the Harlem Renaissance

  • 1920s African-American art and literature that
    focused on A-A rights defiance
  • Langston Hughes, Louis Armstrong were big names.
