National/International Scholarships Coordinator
  • raise awareness among students, faculty and staff
    of external scholarship opportunities such as the
    Rhodes, Marshall, Jack Kent Cooke, Hertz,
    Churchill, and Truman
  • identify and encourage qualified students to
    apply for scholarships
  • provide accurate scholarship information
  • offer skills workshops (writing personal
    statements, interviewing)
  • coordinate screening process for scholarships
    that require institutional nomination
  • identify opportunities to enhance students
    competitiveness

  • to further the vision of the individual or
    organization that funds the scholarship
  • sustained commitment to service and community
  • outstanding record of leadership
  • academic excellence and intellectual
    distinction
  • potential to make a significant contribution to
    society
  • promise of effective service to the world in the
    decades ahead
  • intended for graduate study
  • covers tuition, fees, and provides a stipend
  • dollar amount and duration varies by award
  • eligible degree programs vary by award

Application Process
  • begins months in advance of deadlines
  • internal deadline vs. national deadline
  • significant investment of time, energy and work
  • thorough self-reflection, identification of
    academic and professional goals
  • multiple drafts of a personal statement
  • 3, 5 or more detailed letters of recommendation
  • application form, transcript, writing samples,
    resume
  • institutional nomination

Characteristics of a Competitive Candidate
  • high GPA (recipients usually have 3.7 GPA)
  • research and/or internship experience
  • meaningful community or public service experience
  • leadership experience
  • strong relationships with faculty
  • study abroad experience, language skills
  • well rounded, passionate individual
  • clear sense of how further education will enable
    talents to be used for the greater good
  • researched scholarships and has applied only to
    those that are a strong match given
    qualifications and interests

  • The Foundation provides fellowships to the
    exceptionally talented in the study of applied
    sciences and engineering. Applied" is broadly
    construed to mean fields of endeavor in which one
    applies, invents, and/or develops results from
    the basic physical sciences to generate solutions
    to problems of comparatively near-term,
    widespread human interest.
  • Fellowships tenable at over 40 universities for
    graduate work leading to award of the PhD degree
    in applications of the physical sciences.
  • The Foundation supports the graduate education of
    those who can be expected to have the greatest
    impact on the application of the physical
    sciences to human problems during the next
    half-century.
  • Fellowship renewable up to 5 years.
  • 15-20 awards per year (700 applicants).
  • Does not require institutional nomination.

  • Eligibility
  • seniors or first year graduate students planning
    to do graduate study in the applications of the
    physical, biological and engineering sciences
  • US citizens, permanent residents of US
  • Does not support students pursuing advanced
    professional degrees other than the PhD, such as
    enrollees in MD, LLD or MBA programs, although
    will support the PhD portion of a joint MD/PhD
    study program.

  • Established in 1963 at the recommendation of
    Winston Churchill. Offers an opportunity to
    American students to pursue graduate studies in
    engineering, mathematics, and sciences at
    Churchill College, University of Cambridge.
  • Scholarship is tenable for 9 or 12 months,
    depending on the academic program.
  • 12 scholarships are awarded each year.

  • U.S. citizen
  • enrolled in a participating institution
  • 19-26 years of age
  • hold a BA from an accredited US university
  • may not hold PhD

First Steps
  • Research scholarships to become fully aware of
    eligibility requirements, selection criteria,
    application process, deadlines, etc. Apply only
    for those awards for which you are a strong
    match.
  • Complete the Preliminary Application and return
    to the National/International Scholarship
    Coordinator by June 1, 2007.
  • Over the summer, begin drafting your personal
    statement. Arrange for letters of recommendation.
  • Stay in close contact with the National/Internatio
    nal Scholarship Coordinator regarding your
    application.
  • Be aware of and meet the internal application
    deadline.
