Leaves come in many different sizes and shapes.
But no matter the size or shape they all have an
important job to the rest of the plant. Each
leaf has a network of veins running through them.
Food (nutrients) and water are carried to the
leaf through these veins.
3
Flowers not only make a plant look pretty, they
are often the source for reproducing the plant.
Many times the seed can be found here. Insects
also enjoy the benefits the flower holds in the
nectar.
4
A fruit is simply the part of the plant that
contains the seeds. Apples, oranges, and
strawberries are fruits, but so are peanuts,
cucumbers, and green beans! They all have seeds
in them. Fruits grow out of flowers and the
flower dries up and drops off the plant. Some
fruits like peaches and cherries contain only one
large seed. Others like tomatoes and oranges
have many seeds inside them.
5
The stem allows water and minerals to go up to
the leaves while sugary food (sap) is moving down
the stem to all parts of the plant. The stem
could be compared to the spine of your body,
although it doesnt contain bones to be held
upright it does need water to keep the stem
standing tall.
6
All flowering plants make fruits with seeds
inside them. Before a seed can sprout into a new
plant it must land on the ground and have room to
grow. Some seeds are sent through the air like
dandelions and maple seeds. Others rely on birds
and animals to drop them in various locations.
7
The roots are the first part of the plant to grow
when it sprouts. Roots serve as a plant anchor
by keeping it from being blown away by the wind.
The roots also provide important water and
nutrients to the rest of the plant. There are
two types of roots fibrous and tap. Fibrous
roots can be found on grass - thin and short.
Carrots and beets are forms of tap roots - large
thick roots.

Can you name the parts of the plant?
