  • Chairperson, WMO RA V WG on Climate Matters

2
World Meteorological Organization (WMO)World
Climate Program
  • Authoritative International Scientific Programme
  • Goals to improve understanding of the climate
system and to apply for the benefit of societies
coping with climate variability and change.
  • WCP Programmes/Activities
  • Agricultural Meteorology Programme
  • Climate Coordination Activities
  • World Climate Applications and Services Programme
  • World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme
  • Commissions
  • Commission for Agricultural Meteorology
  • Commission for Climatology
  • World Climate Conference - 3
  • Climate Information

3
Commission for Climatology
  • Vision Statement The vision of the Commission
for Climatology is to stimulate, understand, lead
    and coordinate international technical activity
to obtain and apply climate information and
    knowledge in support of sustainable
    socio-economic development and environmental
    protection.

4
WMO World Weather Watch
  • To analyze and predict weather and climate
  • Combines observing systems, telecommunication
    facilities, and data-processing and forecasting
    centres - operated by Members
  • Make available meteorological, climatological,
and related environmental information needed to
provide efficient services in all Members

5
The Global Data-Processing and Forecasting System
  • Preparation of special products for
climate-related diagnosis on a global or regional
    scale
  • Intercomparison of analysis and forecast
    products, monitoring of observational data
quality, verification of the accuracy of prepared
products and services, diagnostic studies and NWP
    model development
  • Long-term storage of GOS data and GDPFS products,
verification results for operational and research
    use
  • Maintenance of a continuously updated catalogue
of data and products stored in the system
  • Exchange between GDPFS centres of ad hoc
    information via distributed data bases
  • Conduct of workshops and seminars on the
preparation and use of GDPFS output products.

6
WMO Regional Climate Centres
  • WMO Global Data-Processing and Forecasting System
and WMO Commission on Basic Systems
  • Encourage Each WMO Region to develop type of
Regional Climate Centre to meet their needs

14th Session of RA V
  • 5.1.2 Defined an appropriate mode for delivering
    RCC functions in the Region.
  • NMHSs wanted a clear delineation between RCC
services delivered at the regional level and the
services delivered by NMHSs at the national and
    local levels.
  • Further clarify how RCC functions should be
    implemented in the Region.
  • Re-establish the RA V Working Group on
    Climate-related Matters.
  • To provide further advice and proposals on the
role, structure and mechanism of the Regional
    Climate Centre in the region

WMO RA V Climate Survey
  • November 2004, WMO RA V Task Team on Regional
Climate Centre Services Surveyed WMO RA V Members
  • Survey Results Used With 2001 Pacific Needs
Analysis and 2002 PI-GCOS Action Plan
