Title: Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Training

1
Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Training
2
Bloodborne Pathogens Training Must Cover
  • Federal Standard
  • UWs Exposure Control Plan
  • Transmission of Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Methods to Reduce or Prevent Exposure
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine
  • Exposure Emergencies
  • Labels and Signs

3
But First...
  • What is a bloodborne pathogen?

4
Hepatitis C
  • 60 asymptomatic
  • 70 to 85 progression to chronicity
  • versus 10 to 15 for Hep B
  • Hepatocellular carcinoma in long term chronics
  • 90 transfusion-associated hepatitis
  • In Laramie

5
Bloodborne Pathogen Training
  • Federal Standard
  • UWs Exposure Control Plan

6
Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan
  • A plan to minimize the hazards of bloodborne
    pathogens for employees
  • Copies available at all work times
  • Employer responsibilities

7
Transmission of Bloodborne PathogensPotentially
Infectious Materials
  • Some human body fluids
  • Human blood and components
  • Unfixed human tissue
  • Commercially available materials

8
Potentially Infectious Human Body Fluids
  • visibly contaminated with blood
  • all body fluids where it is difficult to tell if
    the fluid is contaminated
  • semen
  • vaginal secretions
  • amniotic fluid
  • deep tissue fluids

9
Occupational Exposures
  • sharp contaminated object pierces skin
  • contaminated object touches inflamed skin, acne,
    skin abrasions.
  • contaminated surface touches eyes, nose, mouth or
    open wounds or inflamed skin.

10
Methods to Reduce or Prevent Exposures
11
Minimize Exposure by
  • Universal precautions -- work habits
  • Engineering Controls -- design safety into the
    task
  • Work practice controls --
  • use appropriate equipment
  • use personal protective equipment

12
Universal Precautions
  • Assume all human blood is infectious
  • just as one assumes all sneezes are infectious

13
Wash Your Hands
  • Wet hands under warm running water.
  • Thoroughly soap hands, rubbing all surfaces for
    at least 15 seconds.
  • Rinse and dry hands with paper towel.
  • Turn off water with paper towel.
  • Use lotion if you wish.

14
Disinfectants
  • disinfect work surfaces with 1 part bleach to 9
    parts water.

15
Hepatitis B Vaccine
  • Safe and effective

16
Training
  • for all employees that have reasonably
    anticipated occupational exposure to potentially
    infectious materials

17
First AidHow to Protect Yourself
  • Put on latex gloves that are kept in the first
    aid kit.
  • Assist victim to help themselves. Put own their
    hand pressure on wound.
  • Use a barrier between you and victim's blood.
Apply pressure with a wad of clothing.

18
Remember
  • INTACT skin is an excellent barrier to bloodborne
diseases. Only at risk of infection if blood
touches broken skin and mucous membranes.

19
Exposure Emergencies
  • What is an exposure?
  • Wash exposed area
  • Report to supervisor
  • Go to Emergency Room

20
