What is a clause?
  • A clause is a word group that contains a verb and
its subject and that is used as a sentence or as
    part of a sentence.

5
What is an Independent Clause?
  • An independent clause expresses a complete
thought and can stand by itself as a sentence.
  • Example

6
What is a Subordinate Clause?
  • A Subordinate (or dependant) clause has a subject
and its verb, but does not express a complete
thought. Therefore, it cannot stand by itself as
    a complete sentence.

independent clauses and no subordinate clauses.

What is a Complex Sentence?

clause and at least one subordinate clause
  • Example
  • When John handed in his homework, he forgot to
give his teacher the last page.

12
Your turn
