  • Type 1

  • Gestational
  • There are 18.2 million people in the United
    States, or 6.3 of the population, who have
    diabetes.

Type 1
  • Usually diagnosed in children and young adults
  • Body does not produce insulin
  • Used to be called juvenile diabetes
  • Must use insulin injection

Type 2
  • Most common type of diabetes
  • Body does not produce enough insulin or cells
    ignore insulin
  • More common in African Americans, Latinos, Native
    Americans, and Asian Americans as well as aged
    population

Gestational
  • Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before
    but who have high blood sugar
  • Affects about 4 of all pregnant women - about
    135,000 cases of gestational diabetes in the
    United States each year.

Signs and Symptoms
  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst
  • Extreme hunger
  • Unusual weight loss
  • Increased fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Blurry vision

Is Diabetes Serious?
  • YES! If left untreated or improperly managed,
    diabetes can result in a variety of
    complications, including
  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Eye disease
  • Problems with erection (impotence)
  • Nerve damage

  • Educate yourself about diabetes
  • Participate in regular physical activity
  • Have a healthy diet
  • Manage your weight and lifestyle
  • Use of medication
  • Control your blood pressure

Testing Your Blood Sugar
  • Two different tests
  • 1. Finger stick healthy readings before
    meals 80-120 mg/dl at bedtime 100-140 mg/dl
  • 2. Hemoglobin A1c Test

Hemoglobin A1c Test
  • Test gives you a picture of your average blood
    glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months
  • The results give you a good idea of how well your
    diabetes treatment plan is working.

    control the disease and not let it take over your
    life!
