What is a DBQ????
  • A document-based question (DBQ) is an essay or
series of short-answer questions that is
constructed by students using one's own knowledge
combined with support from several provided
    sources.
  • Document-based questions
  • focus on critical thinking skills and ask
students to make comparisons, draw analogies,
apply knowledge to the given data, and require
    students to apply historic analysis.
  • ask students to take positions on issues or
    problems and support their conclusions.
  • require students to look at issues from multiple
    perspectives.
  • require students to apply skills they use as
    adults

  • According to John McCoy, the institution of
sharecropping was one reason for Reconstructions
failure because many former slaves worked for
little more than food and shelter once they were
given their freedom, which was very similar to
    their lives as slaves.

Body Paragraphs
The body paragraphs of your essay will break down
the three major topics of discussion in your
essay.
How you determine those topics, depends on the
particular essay question. In future DBQ essays,
you will figure out what makes the most sense to
you.
In order to be consistent as a class, we are all
going to use the same three major ideas for this
particular DBQ essay.

find information from the documents to support
those ideas.
Look through each of the documents and find ANY
BIT OF INFORMATION that supports any of the three
main ideas that weve already established.
In the appropriate box in the second column,
write ANY INFORMATION THAT APPLIES. Then write
the number of the document where you got that
information in parenthesis after it.
