The Skinny on Nutrition
  • A WebQuest created by

Task 1
  • You should have already collected the client
information you need. The rest of your tasks
will be directed by this WebQuest. Follow the
instructions and use the links throughout the
WebQuest to complete all 6 tasks.
  • Continue on to Task 2

Task 2
  • In order to set a goal for your client, you need
to know whether they are underweight, overweight,
or normal weight. The easiest way to find out is
using their Body Mass Index. Using this BMI
website, enter your clients height and weight to
determine their BMI. Record this number along
with what weight category it falls in.
  • If your clients weight is in the normal range,
maintaining their current weight is their goal,
    continue on to Task 3.
  • If your client is obese, overweight, or
    underweight, click here.

Task 2 Continued
  • You need to set a goal weight for your client.
Using the BMI website, enter in different weights
with your clients height until they reach a
normal BMI. This will be your clients goal
    weight.
  • Record the goal weight for your client and
explain why it is important for them to gain or
lose the weight. What health problems might
they have if they do not? You will find this
    information on the website.
  • Continue on to Task 3.

Task 3
  • Go to this website MyPyramid and use MyPyramid
Plan to find your clients specific calorie
needs. Answer these questions How much of each
food group should my client eat daily? How many
total calories should he/she get? How many extra
calories should he/she be limited to. What are
    considered extra calories?

Task 3 Continued
  • Eating the right amount of food is not always
enough. You have to choose the right types of
food as well. Use the Dietary Guidelines for
Americans to tell your client the best types of
food from each food group. In addition, what
types of foods should your client avoid?
  • When you are finished, continue on to Task 4

Task 4
  • Use the MyPyramid Menu Planner to plan 3 days
worth of meals (breakfast, snack, lunch, and
dinner). Put in your clients information and be
sure to choose the option of moving toward a
healthier weight if it comes up.
  • A screen will come up that will total each food
group, total calories, and extra calories for you
when you choose foods. Type in healthy foods you
think your client will like. Be sure that each
day your client gets the right amount of each
food group, but does not go over total calories
    or extra calories.
  • Copy and paste each days menu into a word
document and save, or record on paper. If you
exit the website, it will not save your menu.
  • When you are finished, click here.

Task 4 continued
  • Look over the menus you have planned for your
client. Are there any foods he/she would not be
able to cook without a recipe? If so use this
recipe search engine to find a healthy recipe for
each of these foods. Be sure to refine your
search by checking the low fat and low sugar
boxes. Copy the recipes into a word document and
    save them.
  • When you are finished, click here.

Task 4 continued
  • Every once in a while your client is going to be
short on time and need food fast. Dont let that
be the downfall of their healthy eating. Using
Google, find the main website for your clients 2
    favorite fast food restaurants.
  • All major restaurants now have their entire menu
    available with nutritional information. Choose
an entire meal (sandwich/salad, side item, and
drink) for your client from each restaurant.
Explain for them in detail why this meal is
healthier than their usual choice. Be sure to
follow the guidelines for healthy eating you
    found earlier.
  • Continue on to Task 5.

Task 5
  • Eventually your client is going to have to take
over cooking on their own. Summarize the healthy
cooking techniques listed in this article for
    your client.
  • Unhealthy foods can be made healthier, if you
know how. Using this article on recipe makeovers
give your client specific ways to make even the
    worst recipe healthier.
  • When you are finished, click here.

Task 5 continued
  • Changing recipes to make them healthier can be a
little tricky. You need to do it once as an
example for your client. Start by finding an
original (unhealthy) recipe of one of your
clients favorite foods. Copy and paste it into
a word document with your group name, save, and
    print.
  • Next use the healthy cooking techniques and
substitution tricks you just learned to modify
the recipe. Mark your changes on the original
recipe in a colored pen. Write neatly and be
sure to explain the changes you made so that your
client can easily follow your lead in modifying
recipes on their own in the future.
  • Continue on to Task 6.
