NEESR Payload Project SGER Proposals Background
Work
  • Find appropriate NEESR II, SG, or GC project from
    NSF Awards Database Search http//www.nsf.gov/awar
    dsearch/
  • Contact NEESR II, SG, and GC project PI for
concurrence/ feasibility (you will need letter
from that PI for your SGER proposal)
  • Answer the following
  • Why is the project important to do as a payload?
  • How does the payload utilize the NEESR (II, SG,
    or GC) test set-up?
  • Does the NEES equipment site have the capability
    to test the payload?
  • How will the project impact the field?
  • What will students learn?
  • How will students from underrepresented groups be
    involved?

3
NEESR Payload Project SGER Proposal Preparation
  • Prepare proposal in accordance with the current
NSF Grant Proposal Guide (GPG) for SGER proposals
  • Utilize the test set-up of a NSF-funded NEESR II,
SG, or GC project (see NSF 06-504)
  • Start proposal title with SGER NEESR Payload
Project to NEESR II (or SG or GC) Award
    CMS-xxxxxxx
  • Address explicitly intellectual merit and broader
    impacts in project summary
  • Include student support (strongly encouraged)
  • Budget up to 75,000 total
  • Include in supplementary documentation section
  • A letter from PI of NEESR II, SG, or GC project
    confirming agreement/feasibility to use test
    set-up
  • Project schedule

4
Steps for NEESR Payload Project SGER Proposal
Submission to NSF
  • Contact NSF Program Director (PD) of NEESR-funded
II, SG, or GC project for programmatic interest
in topic, availability of funds, is it a NEESR
    payload SGER, etc?
  • Douglas Foutch, dfoutch_at_nsf.gov, 703-292-7003
  • Richard Fragaszy, rfragasz_at_nsf.gov, 703-292-7011
  • Joy Pauschke, jpauschk_at_nsf.gov, 703-292-7024
  • If invited by PD, then email PD a two-page
maximum project summary with a one-page draft
    budget (by Feb 1)
  • If invited by PD, then email PD the full SGER
    proposal with proposed budget
  • If invited by PD, submit the full SGER proposal
on FastLane (NEESR Payload Project SGER Proposals
submitted on FastLane without invitation by PD
    will be returned without review)
  • Help with pre-award review
  • NEESinc Equipment Site Policies Compliance Check
  • Final budget negotiations with NSF

5
NEESR Payload Project SGER Proposal Awarded by
NSF
  • Follow NEESinc policies on awarded project
    (see NSF 06-504 and www.nees.org)
  • NEES Facilities User Guide
  • NEESinc Data Sharing and Archiving Policies and
    Guidelines
  • Other policies, as appropriate,
  • Contact NEESinc
  • Sign a NEESinc Research Participation Agreement

Note Funding of NEESR Payload Project SGER
Proposals is based on overall quality of the

8. Small Grants for Exploratory Research (SGER)
Proposals for small-scale, exploratory, and
high-risk research in the fields of science,
engineering, and education normally supported by
NSF may be submitted to individual programs. Such
research is characterized as preliminary work on
untested and novel ideas ventures into emerging
research ideas the application of new expertise
or new approaches to "established" research
topics having extreme urgency with regard to
availability of or access to data, facilities, or
specialized equipment, including quick-response
research on natural disasters and similar
unanticipated events and efforts of similar
character likely to catalyze rapid and innovative
advances.
