Human considerations
  • Separate reception area and discharge of patients
  • Keeping these two areas separate keeps your happy
    incoming patients from coming face-to-face with
    those that may be mourning the death of a pet.

Animal Behavior
  • Have a separate dog and cat entrance
  • Cat-only veterinary clinics or boarding
    facilities
  • Separate housing for different species

Infectious Disease
  • Minimizing the spread of disease
  • Having sick rooms and clean rooms
  • Requiring certain precautions such as Bordetella
  • Knowing the immunocompetence of animals
  • Immunosuppressive therapy
  • Age of animal
  • Stress to the animal

Ventilation and Lighting
  • Ventilation should enter the surgery suite first,
    or clinic may use positive pressure
  • Regulations of air changes per minute
  • Lighting should mimic day light to limit stress.
  • Animals must have a light and a dark cycle.

Quarantine Areas
  • Especially important for breeding facilities.
  • More intensive for cats than dogs.
  • Why?
  • FIV and FeLV
  • A new tom arriving at facility may need
  • Blood testing for FIV and FeLV
  • Blood typing
  • Quarantine for 2-4 weeks and retest of blood

  • A tom that is only temporary to the facility may
    only require
  • Certification of health
  • Quarantine of new animals or those in contact
    with the temporary tom in a separate room

Doggy Day Care
  • Cleaning
  • Enrichment
  • Other dogs
  • Toys
  • Should be rubber (impermeable and sterilizable)
  • Stuffed animals are fomites (inanimate objects
    that can carry infectious diseases)
  • Ramps, elevated decks
  • Human interaction
