  • The Makah tribe lived in the northwest coast.
  • They lived by the Pacific ocean.
  • They lived by trees.

Shelter
  • They lived in longhouses made out of wood.
  • Four or Five families lived in one house.
  • In front of their homes they had totem poles that
    showed the history of their families.

Clothing
  • The clothing the Makah tribe wore was skirts,
    dresses, and capes.
  • At their potlatches they wore colorful costumes.
  • Both men and women wore woven cedar hats.
  • Their skirts and dresses were made out of
    shredded cedar bark.
  • The mens capes were made out of sea otter
    skins.

Food
  • They hunted the gray whale.
  • They also hunted salmon, mussels, and clams.
  • Deer and Elk were also a source of food for the
    Makahs.
  • They cooked their food over the fire.

Interesting Facts
  • Approx. 10 years ago, whale hunting was brought
    back to the Makah tribes.
  • The Makah tribes still exist today, but the whale
    hunting is very limited to only 1 whale per month
    because whales were becoming endangered at one
    time.
  • The Makahs held Potlatches (gift-giving
    cermeonies).
  • The totem poles were wooden posts carved with
    animals and faces representing family history.
