History of Turntablism

• In 1937 John Cage had ideas for using records to
  create music
  
• In 1948 Pierre Schaeffer used multiple turntables
  to prompt desired sounds from existing pieces of
  music and altered the music by changing the
  speed, adjusting the volume and playing the
  sounds backwards.
• 3 DJs accredited with pushing Turntablism into
  the eyes of the Mainstream
  
• Afrika Bambaata
• Grandmaster Flash
• Kool Herc
• In 1977 Grandmaster Wizard Theodore accidentally
  created the scratch.
  
• Early 90s Today has introduced what is known
  as DJ battles.

Elements of Turntablism

• 2 elements in the art form Turntablsim
• Scratching - also known as cutting, is a
  technique where the turntablist uses vinyl and
  moves the record back and forth against the
  needle to produce various sounds
• Beat Juggling - is created by using two records
  and adjusting the arrangement of the musical
  elements from both to create a new rhythmical
  composition.
