Statistics
  • By the year 2011 the Bradfords Black and Asian
communities will represent more than 34 of the
    total population.
  • Population
  • Current Composition Projected Change 2011
  • India 2.7 14
  • Pakistani 12.48 72
  • Bangladeshi .98 82
  • Bradford is the only metropolitan district in
this country whose population is set to rise in
    the next ten years.
  • As statistics shows, that Bradford has a higher
than average proportion of children and young
people with disabilities and higher incidence of
complex life limiting diseases, it is inevitable
that the rise in population will also show a
corresponding rise in the incidence of
    disability.
  • The services and facilities available even at
present rates are stretched to full capacity
therefore it is important that future planning
    begins now.

6
Definition of Disability
  • The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) defines a
disabled person as 'someone who has a physical or
mental impairment that has a substantial and
long-term adverse effect on his/her ability to
carry out day-to-day activities.' This definition
includes not just those with mobility or sensory
impairments but also a wide range of other
impairments including mental health problems such
    as depression or schizophrenia, learning
    difficulties including dyslexia, diabetes, heart
    conditions and severe facial disfigurement.

7
Misconceptions
8
Obstacles faced by Young Asian disabled persons
  • Negative stereotypes across the Board
  • People perceive the Disability not Ability
  • Lack of opportunities from local employers
  • Low self esteem and lack of confidence
  • Lack of family support
  • Lack of support from the professionals

9
  • What You can Do as an individual
  • Keep an open mind and judge each person on their
    ability not disability
  • Be Willing to Take on disabled placements
  • Use the resources available including help from
    disability Organisations

10
What you can do as an Employer
  • Training
  • About fair and equal treatment for all employees
and applicants as well as positive diversity
    statements and actions.
  • Recruitment
  • ensure that the language in advertising for job
    vacancies is not limiting.
  • endeavour to increase our advertising in
    disability-focused publications and newspapers to
try to attract more disabled applicants.
  • Volunteer Efforts
  • Give employees the opportunity to choose from
several worthwhile projects at specific charities
and/or needy organisations to make them aware of
    disability issues.

11
Help for Employers
  • The Access to Work programme can help with the
extra costs involved for an employer when taking
on someone with a disability. These could
    include
  • a communicator for people who are deaf or have a
    hearing impairment
  • a reader for someone with impaired vision
  • support workers if you need practical help either
at work or getting to work
  • special equipment or adaptations to equipment to
    suit individual needs
  • alterations to premises or working environment so
that an employee with disabilities can work there
  • help with travel to work costs such as
adaptations to a car, or taxi fares if you can't
    use public transport.
