FYI For this paper, we were to take two movies,
advertisements, or books and show how they are
similar. I decided to take two books and show
how they are similar. The first book is
Dreamland by Sarah Dessen and the second book is
Crank by Ellen
3
Summary A- Dreamland
In this book, Sarah Dessen takes Caitlin, a
typical teenage girl and turns her life upside
down. She was once involved with the
cheerleading squad and making the grade. This
changed when she met Rogerson Biscoe though. He
had her from the moment she first saw him. It
was all fun at and games at first, but then he
began abusing her. She started seeing the
monster that was in him. Among all the
craziness, Caitlin was able to feel that it was
right to give him her virginity. From then on,
she was either having sex with him or getting
beaten up by him. Finally, her parents saw the
real Rogerson, the monster. They saved her from
him and she is finally free.

Summary B- Crank
Kristina was another typical teenage girl whose
life turns into a mess she never imagined. It
all started on a three week visit to her dads
where she met her first love, did new things with
him, started smoking cigarettes, tried meth (also
known as crank or monster.) for the first time.
When she first returned home, she was able to do
without the monster, but not so much without
Adam (her first love). While her and Adam
continued to communicate every so often, the
monster had found a way back into her life. A
lot changed when she began doing crank on a
regular basis, from her friends to a way of life
that involved lies. She continues to go through
her ups and downs, but is never the same as she
was before that one summer trip.

Synthesis
In both of these books, both authors took the two
girls, Caitlin and Kristina, through first loves,
drugs, and changing relationships with
families. First Loves.. Both girls share the
experience of first loves, both of which their
parents wouldnt approve of. Caitlins love,
Rogerson, and Kristinas love, Adam, took the
girls innocence. Each girl began to lie to
their families, hang out with people they
normally wouldnt, and forgot about school being
a priority.

Drugs
  • Caitlin had drank before at parties, but that was
it. Rogerson had her try smoking pot.
  • She began smoking to help herself get through the
    day
  • Also started to hang out with a few other people
    that smoked pot a lot
  • Like Caitlin, Kristina had never done drugs, she
hadnt even picked up a beer.
  • Her boy, and her dad, got her to try crank, which
    got her addicted to it
  • When she was home, she found ways to get some and
started hanging out with a new crowd
  • As her addiction grew, she also needed it to help
    her get through the day.
  • These drugs had taken a daily part in both of
    these girls lives.

Lies...leading to a changing relationship with
their families
  • Both Caitlin and Kristinia began to pick up the
    habit of lying
  • Lied to their friends
  • Lied to their family
  • About where they were
  • What they were doing
  • Who they were with
  • About sneaking out
  • These lies began changing the girls of who they
    were as a person
  • They became less involved in their families
  • The girls began fighting more with family members
  • Became very distant with family members

8
These are three main ways how the two books,
Dreamland and Crank relate to each other. The
first reason, first loves, leads to the second
reason, drugs, and drugs and first loves lead to
the third reason, lying and destroying
relationships. I finished each book in no more
than four days. They are interesting, mind
riveting, and keep you reading to know what
happens next what could possibly get worse.
