Outline of Presentation
  • Background CAT SSL
  • Design Objectives Constraints
  • Four Designs
  • Summary Conclusion
  • Questions

4
Background CAT SSL
  • Headquartered in Peoria, Il
  • World's largest manufacturer of construction and
    mining equipment
  • Shipped 1st skid steer loader in 1999
  • Many applications, one of smallest machines in
    CAT product line

5
Design Objectives for Door
  • Improve visibility
  • Improve sealing
  • Prevent damage to open door when arms/bucket
    lifted
  • Improve aesthetics

6
Design Constraints
  • Costlt300
  • Tooling Costlt2K
  • 1500 hr no failures
  • Installationlt1 hr
  • Removablelt5 min
  • Cannot change head clearance or cab height.

7
Modified Door Hinge
  • Satisfies 5 min. removal
  • Unlocks any seizure by rotating door
  • Single person can install or remove door
  • No need for tools (hammer, wrench, etc.)

8
Improving Visibility
  • Bottom panel eliminated
  • Wiper assembly bolted to glass.
  • Reservoir moved into cab
  • Door extended downward 2 inches.

9
Improving Seal
  • Wanted one-piece frame, impossible.
  • Two-piece, but extend sides until they meet.
  • Also add foam to fill gap under door frame.

10
Prevent Damage from Arms
  • Install switch in door frame.
  • Ties into circuit under seat.
  • Circuit will tie in with power cables so when
door is removed, arms will still operate.

11
Improve Aesthetics
  • Handle moved up to side
  • Glass fills almost entire door.
  • Step moved down.
  • Design attempts most simplistic solution,
    reflected in aesthetics.

12
Summary Conclusion
  • Each design objective met with one or more
    innovation.
  • In formulating detailed design, attention must be
paid to safety guidelines stress analysis.
