Title: Geometry Around Us

1
Geometry Around Us
  • Miss Wheeler
  • December 2007

2
Look at the world around you
  • Can you find lines?
  • Do you see angles?
  • Are there circles?
  • What about combinations of these?

3
Lets take a trip around our school
  • Try to locate each of the sites pictured in the
following slides. (Hint They are all somewhere
on the high school side of the building.)

9
All around us
  • Geometric shapes help define spaces, provide
support, and in many other ways make our building
    unique.

10
Take out your VFT passport!
  • We are going to walk around the building now and
    locate each of these locations.
  • You are to list the location and also at least 3
    geometric shapes you see there.
  • You may also use the terms parallel,
perpendicular, symmetry, and others than just
    names of shapes.

11
When we return from our trip
  • You are going to travel by computer in search of
other examples of geometry in our world. This is
a picture of the Edmund Pettus Bridge near Selma,
    AL.

12
The first stop will be
  • http//www.math-kitecture.com/geometry.htm
  • Can You Find Geometric Shapes in Buildings and
    Structures?
  • This site uses colored lines to help you find the
geometric shapes in photographs of buildings and
    other structures.

13
Visit at least 3 of these sites
  • http//skyscraperpage.com contains pictures and
    facts about famous buildings
  • http//memory.loc.gov/ammem/collections/habs_haer/
    includes historic American buildings

14
  • http//www.pbs.org/wgbh/buildingbig/index.html
includes buildings, bridges, domes, dams, and
    tunnels
  • http//greatbuildings.com/types/models/spatial_mod
els.html contains 3-D models of famous buildings

15
And just for fun, visit one of these sites
  • http//explorer.monticello.org/index.html is a
virtual tour of Thomas Jeffersons Monticello
  • http//www.unmuseum.org/wonders.htm describes the
Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, sometimes
comparing them to structures built much later

16
Makes notes in your passport
  • Where you visit
  • What you see
  • What geometric shapes or facts did you see
  • And have fun on your trip in the world of
geometry oops! You are already there!
