SURFnet6 overview
  • The first nation-wide hybrid optical and packet
    switching infrastructure
  • Based on 6000 km of SURFnet-owned managed dark
fiber, all the way to the customers premises
  • SURFnet6 delivers all SURFnet5 services (native
IPv4 and IPv6) plus Light Path Provisioning
  • Over a single transmission infrastructure
  • Managed via a single control plane
  • Hence, in an economically sound way

Lightpaths
  • A lightpath is an end-to-end Layer 1 transmission
    path with fixed characteristics, e.g.
  • Economical
  • Reliable
  • Secure
  • High-speed (up to 10 Gbit/s)
  • Lightpaths are not constrained by traditional
    framing, routing, and transport technologies
  • Lightpaths are the building blocks for Optical
Private Networks (OPNs) and scientific instruments

Status SURFnet6
  • Photonic layer stable since summer 2005, SURFnet5
    over SURFnet6
  • Network accepted from Industry Partner at end of
    2005
  • SURFnet6 NOC operational
  • Transition well underway
  • Over 75 of ports moved to SURFnet6
  • Thanks to the cooperation of the connected
    organizations already transitioned
  • On the road to be ready before July 1, 2006

12
Transition in more detail
  • Planning shows connected organization transitions
until Jun 15, 2006, still yielding two weeks of
    slack
  • Transition of IP external connectivity almost
    done
  • AMS-IX Done, at 2x 10GE
  • Private peers Progressing, at multiple GE
  • GEANT2 Done, at 2.5G POS, 10G POS follows soon
  • Upstreams CW done at 3x GE, GX follows at 3x GE

Lightpaths and OPN are here!
  • Lightpaths, e.g.
  • Done
  • 10G LOFAR Amsterdam-Groningen
  • 1G Score Enschede-Montreal, Canada
  • Work in progress
  • 10G LHC Amsterdam-Geneva, Switzerland
  • 10G DEISA Amsterdam-Frankfurt, Germany
  • Optical Private Networks being implemented, e.g.
  • Done ArtEZ, Avans, HSDrenthe, HAN, VU
  • Work in progress WUR, OU, INHOLLAND
