Origins
  • Wartime Conferences showed the division, and
    Churchill made the split public when he gave his
    Iron Curtain speech at Fulton, MO in 1946.
    Borders began closing in 1946-47 and Russia
    crushed the hope of Cz when they tried to become
    free in 1947. The U.S. had to intervene in
    Greece in 1947 to save it from Communism. After

  • Berlin Blockade-1948-49- This was the first test
    for the West on their determination to stop the
    growth of communism. For 11 months, we supplied
    W. Berlin and the blockade was lifted when they
    realized our determination. W. Berlin remained
    free.
  • National Security Act, 1947-Created the National
    Security Council and made everyone subject to
    draft until age 55. U.S. kept large forces and
    the military draft.

  • Geneva Conference-1954. N S Vietnam division.
    Supposed to be re-united in 1956. When this did
    not happen, war begins.
  • Hungarian Revolt-1956-crushed with Soviet tanks.
  • Suez Crisis-1956
  • Berlin Crises-1953(workers revolt) 1958-(Soviet
    order for the West to leave in 6 months.

Other Cold War Events, 1950s
  • U-2 Incident-1960- Gary Powers shot down over
    Russia.
  • Castro Revolution-1959- Castro took over January
    1, 1959. Later announced he was a communist and
    the U.S. broke relations and started the boycott
    that is still in force

Truman Domestic Events
  • War Crimes Trials in Nuremberg and Tokyo received
    strong domestic political support. U.S. Supreme
    Court Justice Robert Jackson presided. 11 death
    penalties in Germany and 4 in Japan.
  • Integration of the Armed Forces-1946-Jackie
    Robinson in baseball in 1947. The fight against
    Separate but Equal is being fought in the
    courts.

Truman-Domestic
  • Taft-Hartley Law-1947
  • Election of 1948 and the Fair Deal-Civil Rights
    plank almost defeated Truman. President Dewey
    was not elected
  • Fair Deal promises not fulfilled because of
    domestic opposition from Southern Democrats and
    Republicans. Truman became preoccupied with
    Foreign policy and the 22nd Amendment was passed.

Conclusion
  • Election of 1952-Stevenson vs. Ike and Nixon
  • Truman at the time was one of the most unpopular
    presidents in history. His reputation has now
    reached the Near Great status.
