Wide-Field NIR Imaging Polarimetry of Brown
Dwarfs in M42

We conducted wide-field JHKs polarimetric
observations toward M42. We found 51/314
point sources show larger polarization than
expected from dichroic extinction. --gt intrinsic
polarization, representative of circumstellar
structure.
Nine brown dwarfs have large polarization. This
is a discovery of brown dwarfs associated with
large polarizations, providing a geometrical
evidence of circumstellar structure (i.e.,
disk/envelope system) around young brown dwarfs.
We are conducting similar search of highly
polarized sources in other regions (See also
P49).
