The Grimm Brothers Version of Cinderella
  • Titled Aschenpüttel (Cinder-fool)
  • After her mother dies, Aschenpüttels stepmother
puts her to work as a maid. Her stepsisters pour
peas and lentils into the ash of the hearth, and
Aschenpüttel is forced to pick them out.
  • Her father brings her a hazel twig, which she
plants on her mothers grave. She cries over the
branch, and a tree grows from her tears.
  • A little white bird appears (instead of a fairy
godmother, as in Perraults telling). The bird
    grants her wishes.
  • The King holds a three-day festival to find a
    wife for his son.
  • The stepmother empties a dish of lentils into the
fireplace and orders Aschenpüttel to pick them
out before she can go to the festival.
  • Birds come in to pick out the lentils.
  • Her stepmother tells her that she still has no
    clothes.
  • The white bird gives her a costume of silver and
    gold to wear.
  • She goes to the festival for two days, meets the
prince, and escapes from him at the end of each
    day.
  • On the third day, the prince orders that the
    stairs be coated in pitch.
  • Aschenpüttels golden slipper is stuck in the
    pitch.

8
  • Original Grimm tale
  • Eldest stepsister cuts off her toe in order to
fit into the slipper. The bird gives her away.
  • Younger stepsister cuts of her heel.
  • The stepsisters are then bridesmaids at
Aschenpüttels wedding, where pigeons pick out
    their eyes.

9
  • The Cinderella tale originated in China. The
earliest known record is 9th-century A.D.
  • Chinese foot bindingsmall slipper
  • Her future husband decides to wed her without
actually seeing her. He is first attracted to her
based on her small shoe, which is sold to him by
    a cave man.

  • Anne Sextons poem Cinderella
  • Based on the Grimm Brothers tale
  • Published as part of a collection entitled
Transformations (1971), in which Sexton retells
