OBJECTIVES AND MOTIVATIONS
  • The course aims to examine the needs current
    European labour markets are facing. As
    technological developments are becoming more
    rapid, also jobs change more quickly than before.
    The EU on one hand has to come to terms with
    changes in the world economy and on the other
    hand needs to reinforce the European social
    models, which are committed to social protection,
    social cohesion and solidarity.
  • The course will provide the basic tools to
    address the following economic issues.
  • The benchmark model a competitive labor market.
    Non competitive labor markets some case studies.
  • The current debate on the EU labor market the
    role of institutions and employment protection
    legislations.
  • Flexicurity some drawing lessons from the Danish
    model.
  • Labour market policies in the EU
  • The wage gap among workers that differ in their
    education. The rate of return to schooling.
    Schooling as a signal. On the job training and
    life long learning.
