  • aiming at contributing to the development
  • of sustainable agriculture worldwide.

Responsibility
Effectiveness
4
What is SAI Platforms Vision?
A broad, holistic approach to sustainable
agriculture to provide a reliable supply of
quality agricultural products, meet current and
future needs of populations, improve the
conditions of local communities, and preserve
and possibly improve natural resources.
5
SAI Platforms definition of sustainable
agriculture
  • Sustainable agriculture is a productive,
competitive and efficient way to produce safe
    agricultural products,
  • while at the same time protecting and improving
    the natural environment
  • and the socio-economic conditions of local
    communities.

6

    companies.

    activities.
  • All members have equal voting right.

7

What is unique about the SAI Platform?
  • Members are food companies (manufacturers,
traders and food service) with a direct
    relationship with primary producers.
  • Sustainable agriculture happens at the farm
    level.
  • As food companies are the customers of the
farmers, they are in the best position to work
with their suppliers in developing more
    sustainable agricultural production.
  • SAI Platform is not a multi-stakeholder
organization, but involves all stakeholders in
    their Working Groups, workshops, etc.

11
How does the SAI Platform work?
Members see promoting and developing sustainable
agriculture as pre-competitive. In commodity
specific Working Groups members share knowledge
about sustainable agriculture and
implementation. Working groups together with
farmers, and with input from other stakeholders,
develop commodity specific Principles Practices
for sustainable production. These Principles
Practices are tested in pilots.
12
People, Planet, Profit
  • People society
  • The key players in farming systems.
  • Producer skills.
  • Embrace local, traditional and indigenous
experience together with modern and scientific
    knowledge to develop sustainable farming
    techniques.
  • Provide attractive farming working and living
    conditions.

13
People, Planet, Profit
  • Planet Environment
  • Soil preserve health and fertility.
  • Water conserving water resources, effective
    management.
  • Air Reduce emissions, CO2 sink functions,
    recovering waste gases.
  • Energy minimize inputs from (non-renewable)
    energy sources.
  • Biodiversity Farm successfully while
    maintaining and possibly improving biodiversity
    on and around the farm.
  • Animal health and welfare how to optimize the
    conditions for farm animals.

14
People, Planet, Profit
  • Profit Economy
  • Food quality and safety sufficient availability
    to meet expected demand.
  • Farm economic performance Agricultural farming
can only be sustainable if productive,
    competitive and efficient.
  • SAI Platform members see it as their
responsibility to assist farmers in improving
their practices and productivity and economic
viability, while reducing negative impact on the
    environment.

15
Why SAI Platform membership for food companies.
  • A safe place for communication between companies
    on pre-competitive issues
  • A cost and time efficient way of sharing
expertise with other companies on issues of
    sustainable agriculture
  • An efficient way of mutual support in
    implementing of Principles Practices of
    sustainable agricultural production

16
Why SAI Platform is a good thing for primary
producers.
  • Member companies are their customers and provide
    a market for their products
  • Member companies commit to work with them to not
only produce safe food, but also are concerned
about the economic viability of farming and a
safe working environment for farm workers
  • SAI Platform partners directly with their
    growers/suppliers in developing guidelines for
sustainable production and then have them test
these practices on the farm, then help them
    implement these
