Two Big Changes Coming to NIH Grant Application
Process!
  • New federal-wide application form SF 424
    Research and Related Application replacing PHS
    398.
  • ONLY electronic submission through Grants.gov.
    New process will no longer permit last minute
    submissions.
  • Changes being phased in by type of application
    RO1 change currently scheduled for October 1,
    2006.
  • Applicants are encouraged to prepare themselves
    now to participate in electronic submission
    through Grants.gov. They are strongly urged to
    acquaint themselves with the new forms, the
    technology and changes in the process. They are
    also urged to regularly visit this website to
    keep pace with changes in NIH's quickly evolving
    electronic receipt program.

    Cancer, R21. (2 years, 275 K direct total).
    Aimed at new ideas and feasibility studies.

Training Opportunities in Behavioral Research

  • Cancer Prevention, Control and Behavioral and
    Population Sciences Career Development Award
    (KO7). Provides support for three to five years
    of specialized didactic study and mentored
    research.
  • The NCI Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program
    provides postdoctoral training opportunities in
    cancer prevention and control. Study for an MPH,
    have mentored research in the field of cancer
    prevention and control at NCI. See

NCI funds most applications from The Pool.
  • Majority of NCI funding awarded to applications
    which are unsolicited, using standard dates.
  • Do not need to wait for a Program Announcement or
    Request for Application to submit a good idea.
  • Consider visiting the Center for Scientific
    Review (CSR) website to look at available study
    sections. See, http//cms.csr.nih.gov/
  • Are welcome to write a cover letter, requesting a
    specific study section or specific expertise.
  • DO NOT request specific reviewers they will
    then be considered in conflict with your
    application.

    Plan and Budget Proposal for Fiscal Year 2007

  • For example In our 2004 budget proposal, we
    give special attention to four areas of public
    health emphasis. They are NCI Challenge areas for
    Improving the Quality of Cancer Care and Reducing
    Cancer-Related Health Disparities and
    Extraordinary Opportunity areas in Cancer
    Survivorship Improving Treatment Outcomes and
    Quality of Life, and Research on Tobacco and
    Tobacco-Related Cancers.

2006 By-Pass Budget
  • NCI will support
  • Tobacco use prevention and smoking cessation
    research that addresses underserved and
    understudied youth and young adults.
  • Health behaviors research, including tobacco use,
    among medically underserved people who have
    survived cancer.
  • Research on effective State and community
    programmatic and policy interventions for tobacco
    control.
  • International research on tobacco control,
    prevention, and dissemination to benefit low- and
    middle-income nations.
