  • Describe how some toxins can bioaccumulate. Your

  • Bioaccumulation occurs when toxins are stored in
    the bodies of producers. There may be only a
    small amount of toxin per individual producer but
    many producers are eaten by primary consumers.
    Then many primary consumers are eaten by the
    secondary consumers. Then many secondary
    consumers are eaten by the tertiary consumers.
    The concentration of toxin in each level of the
    food pyramid increases because the toxin is
    passed from one level to the next. It is as if
    the tertiary consumer eats a great many producers
    and gets all of the toxin from all of those
    producers.
