Title: The Lords Supper

1
The Lords Supper
What is the SACRAMENT OF THE ALTAR? It is the
true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ
under the bread and the wine, for us Christians
to eat and to drink, instituted by Christ
Himself. Where is this written? The holy
Evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and St. Paul
the Apostle write thus Our Lord Jesus Christ,
the same night in which He was betrayed, took
bread and when He had given thanks, He brake it
and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take, eat
this is My body, which is given for you. This do
in remembrance of Me. After the same manner also
He took the cup when He had supped, and when He
had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying,
Drink ye all of it this cup is the new testament
in My blood, which is shed for you for the
remission of sins. This do, as oft as ye drink
it, in rememberance of Me.

The Original Context Passover
Exodus 123,7,13 Tell all the congregation of
Israel that on the tenth day of this month every
man shall take a lamb according to their fathers'
houses, a lamb for a household. 7 Then they shall
take some of the blood and put it on the two
doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which
they eat it. 13 The blood shall be a sign for
you, on the houses where you are. And when I see
the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague
will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the
land of Egypt.

The Lords Supper
The Scriptures teach us that four things are
present in the Lords supper
Bread
Wine
Blood
Body

The Lords Supper
What is the benefit of such eating and
drinking? That is shown us by these words, "Given
and shed for you for the remission of sins"
namely, that in the Sacrament forgiveness of
sins, life, and salvation are given us through
these words. For where there is forgiveness of
sins, there is also life and salvation. How can
bodily eating and drinking do such great
things? It is not the bodily eating and drinking
indeed that does them, but the words here
written, "Given and shed for you for the
remission of sins" which words, besides the
bodily eating and drinking, are the chief thing
in the Sacrament and he that believes these
words has what they say and express, namely, the
forgiveness of sins.
5
The Benefit
Jesus said Drink ye all of it this cup is the
new testament in My blood, which is shed for you
for the remission of sins.
  • So we receive
  • Forgiveness of our Sins
  • Life
  • Salvation
  • Strengthening of Faith

The Lords Supper
Who, then, receives such Sacrament
worthily? Fasting and bodily preparation are
indeed a fine outward training but he is truly
worthy and well prepared who has faith in these
words, "Given and shed for you for the remission
of sins." But he that does not believe these
words, or doubts, is unworthy and unprepared for
the words "for you" require all hearts to believe.
7
Who is worthy?
  • Luther says the one who believes in the words
for you is well prepared. This means this meal
    is for
  • Christians
  • Who Admit their sins
  • And Know that forgiveness is offered in this
    meal.
  • This always implies a belief in the real presence
of Christs body and blood since without it,
there is no forgiveness, only food.

8
Why are some excluded?
1 Corinthians 1128-29 Let a person examine
himself, then, and so eat of the bread and drink
of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks
without discerning the body eats and drinks
judgment on himself. God makes clear that eating
and drinking the wine and bread without
understanding that this is more than a meal is
dangerous to peoples life with God.
1 Corinthians 1016-17 The cup of blessing that
we bless, is it not a participation in the blood
of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a
participation in the body of Christ? 17 Because
there is one bread, we who are many are one body,
for we all partake of the one bread. Biblically,
and throughout the history of the church, the
reception of the Lords Supper has been a
statement of unity between those eating it
together. Where there is not unity of teaching,
we work towards it rather than imagining it.
