Title: Faraday Shielding for Barrel TRT

1
Faraday Shielding for Barrel TRT
  • Jack Fowler
  • Duke University
  • Spain Workshop - 2003

2
Inner Cylinder Shielding
  • Inner cylinder will be coated with copper (35
micron) clad kapton (25 micron) (Total thickness
    100 microns)
  • Due to the material width, there will be 3
    separate wraps
  • The wraps will not overlap

3
1st Prototype of Cylinder
  • Epoxy (AY 103 / HY 991) will be applied to the
surface of the cylinder at an average thickness
    of 100 microns
  • We have measured a total thickness of epoxy and
shielding material of 250 to 300 microns

4
Epoxy Application
5
Applying Copper/Kapton
6
Seams between wraps
  • 3M Copper EMI Shielding Tape 1181 will be used to
cover the seams of the wraps (66 microns thick
    total and 35 micron copper)
  • The tape will be spot soldered at the joint to
the shield. This will be done approximately
every 20 cm along the length.

7
Cylinder with Shield
8
Inner Cylinder Summary
  • Kapton coated copper will be epoxied onto the
    cylinder
  • The seams will be covered using copper tape.
  • These joints will also be soldered.
  • Maximum thickness should not exceed 350 to 400
    microns. We have 1 mm.

9
Space Frame Shielding
  • The complete outer surface of the space frame
will be covered with 3M Embossed Copper Foil
Shielding Tape 1245 without tin plating (shown
is tin plated) 100 microns thick / 35 micron Cu
  • The cooling tube corners will not be covered

10
Tape coverage
  • 18 mm of the space frame in Z will be covered.
  • The edge of the tape and frame will be coated
with epoxy (AY103 /HY991) to prevent peeling

11
Soldered Joints
  • All of the intersection points of the tape pieces
will be spot soldered to ensure a long term
    electrical connection

12
Joining the Inner Cylinder to Space Frame
  • The cylinder shielding will be applied within 0.5
mm of the area the space frame will occupy.
  • Soldered connection will be made for each 1/32

13
Space Frame Summary
  • Embossed Bare Copper tape will be used to shield
    the space frame
  • The inner cylinder will be connected to the space
    frames by soldered connections.

14
Outer Cylinders
  • The outer cylinder will be covered with the same
copper/kapton material on the outer surface.
  • The connection to the will most likely be made
using tape around the outer corner.
