Dogon Tribe
  • Cliff dwellers
  • Climb cliffs to collect pigeon guano to use as
    fertilizer, brass statues and wooden headrests to
    trade at market.
  • Believed they were created by gods who came from
    the sky in space ships.

Three principal groups The Awa, Lebe and Binu.
  • The Awa-Cult of the dead
  • The primary purpose of the purpose of the Awa
    dance ceremonies is to lead souls of the dead to
    their final resting place.
  • The Lebe- Earth God
  • Main concern with the agricultural growing cycle
  • The chief priest is called a Hogon
  • The Binu-Totemic practice
  • The role of this group is to interact with the
    ancestors that have died.

  • Bark cloth was used for clothing before weaving
    was introduced.
  • Cotton and silk. Women may pick cotton or spin
    materials into thread, but only men are allowed
    to weave.
  • Pottery is a skill that is taught to a daughter
    by the mother.
  • The Ashanti also do woodcarving and metal
    casting.
