• There are thousands of bears in dreadful captive
  conditions in China being used for the extraction
  of Bear Bile. Bear bile is drawn off these bears
  through a small steel catheter inserted into the
  belly of the bear which is held confined in a
  cage. These cages are usually about the length of
  the animal and about 2 foot high. The bear can
  hardly move and may be kept in this cage for
  many, many years.
• The Chinese government has said that it would be
  willing to bring this system to a close (but this
  could take a long time) and one of the ways for
  addressing this is to find alternative lifetime
  care facilities for these bears.

What is Bear Bile used for?

• Bear bile is used in Traditional Chinese
  Medicines (TCM), to treat various liver and
  intestinal diseases. BUT there is no longer any
  need to use bear bile it is easy to replace
  with herbal and synthetic remedies, which are
  cheaper, more effective, and more readily
  available.

These are the type of bears farmed for their
bile, they are called Moon bears because of the
beautiful yellow crescent on their chest.

Animals Asia

• Animals Asia is a charity based in China (Hong
  Kong) run by Jill Robinson MBE. Animals Asia has
  entered into an agreement with the Government of
  China to provide sanctuary for bears and so far
  about 205 bears have been rescued form Bear Bile
  farms. Of course caring for these bears is a
  major challenge and there are many needs.
• Animals Asia has identified some of those needs
  which form the basis of the Bear Necessities
  Appeal.
• Funds to buy these Bear Necessities will come to
  Born Free and we will then assist Animals Asia in
  buying the goods.

How will your donations help?

• 11 for one bag of life-saving intravenous
  fluids 90 for a complete course of antibiotics
  and pain killers, following surgery to remove the
  catheter and treat the infected area (these are
  given to the bears twice a day in a tasty fruit
  shake!) 144 for a pair of cordless surgical
  clippers to prepare the rescued bears for vital
  surgery. 2,300 for a set of ceiling-mounted
  surgery lights to enable precision surgery.
  3,300 to care for one bear for one year this
  includes the costs of food, medication,
  veterinary skills, housing and accommodation, and
  general care from our bear workers.
• We are asking you caring people to help us
  contribute to getting these Bear Necessities.

What has already been achieved?

• On arrival at the centre this female Moon bear
  and her two cubs were very scared and confused
  and after a life saving operation, they were all
  reunited.
• The keepers were worried about whether they would
  lose their bond after being separated ,but they
  were so happy to see each other. This was the
  first time they had all been together with out
  being confined to a cage.

Where will the money go to?

• Money will be sent through Born free to Animals
  Asia and their bear rescue centre in Chengdu,
  where it will be used to help the bears that have
  already been rescued and aid the campaign to
  rescue more bears from this horrible way of life.
  We hope to raise some money to contribute
  towards this good cause.

• We will be holding a Fashion show on
• Wednesday 18th in the Main School hall
• We would like each form to elect one person to be
  entered into the show and to agree on an outfit.
• There will a panel of judges who will decide who
  the best dressed person is and they will be
  named Miss FSG and will win prize for their
  form!!!!!
• Everyone else is welcome to come to look at all
  the outfits and there will be a very small fee of
  20p to watch the show so that we help these poor
  bears in China.
