1
GOAL FOUR4.01
  • The Great West and the Rise of the Debtor
  • (1860-1896)
  • The learner will evaluate the great westward
movement and assess the impact of the
    agricultural revolution on the nation.
  • Compare and contrast the different groups of
peoples who migrated to the West and describe the
    problems they experienced.

2
Joseph Smith
  • Founder of the Mormon faith. He translated the
book of Mormon. Was killed in Salt Lake City.

3
Brigham Young
  • Leader of the Mormons after Joseph Smiths death.
Helped create many new Mormon colonies.
Established Salt Lake City, which has become a
    huge Mormon center.

4
Mormons
  • A religion formed in 1830. Were persecuted and
driven west where they tried to make a Mormon
    state.

5
Homestead Act
  • Act of Congress passed in 1862. It encouraged
people to move west by offering them 150 acres of
land if they would settle on it.

6
Roles of Women
  • Women continued to look out for the home mainly
but were increasingly moving out into the
workplace little by little. Some states even
allowed women to vote in the late 1800s.

7
Roles of African Americans
  • After blacks were freed they were still oppressed
greatly. They more than likely ended up back with
their old masters working. They had no enforced
rights and could not vote or hold office.

8
Roles of Chinese
  • The Chinese were treated badly. They mainly
worked on the transcontinental railroad for low
pay. They were discriminated against also.

9
Roles of Irish
  • The Irish arrived in America as immigrants and
were generally very poor. They stayed near the
coast because they had no money to move out west
and make a living. They were severely persecuted
against because they were outsiders and Catholic.

10
Comstock Lode
  • A huge gold and silver strike in Nevada in 1859.
Led to the creation of Virginia City.

11
Morrill Land Grant Act
  • Created in 1862. It gave large amounts of land to
any state that stayed in the Union during the
Civil War. The land Gave increased Congressional
representation and was sold for a profit to help
the establishment of colleges in each state.

12
Sod Houses
  • Houses that were built on the Great Plains. There
was no lumber available so they pioneers settling
there used clumps of grass and earth, called sod,
    to build homes.

13
Oklahoma Land Rush
  • After the government opened up the Indian lands
in Oklahoma to settlers people from all over
