Title: WorldSID Advanced Harmonised Dummy for Side Impact

1
WorldSIDAdvanced Harmonised Dummyfor Side Impact
Martin Page C.E.E.S.A.R. (representing LAB) On
behalf of the WorldSID Task Group
2
Background The WorldSID Project
  • Project under auspices of ISO TC22/SC12/WG5
  • Goal to replace all existing adult side impact
dummies with a single, highly biofidelic model
    acceptable to all users
  • Government, industry researchers working
    together
  • Large choice of instrumentation

3
Project Organisation
4
Project Timeline
5
Milestones
  • June1997 ISO/TC22/SC12/WG5 resolution followed
by creation of Task Group regional groups
  • Oct.1998 Project Manager contracted
  • Jan.1999 Request for Quote for dummy design
  • Mar.1999 presentation of concepts
  • then creation of Design Team
  • Sep.1999 completion of design specification
  • June2000 sign off of dummy design

6
Milestones (contd)
  • Sep.2000 assembly of prototype
  • Dec.2000 delivery of prototype
  • Dec.2000 first crash tests and WorldSID Workshop
  • Jan.2001 evaluation of prototype biofidelity
  • Jun.2001 identification of initial modifications
  • followed by application of modifications

7
Next Steps
  • Re-testing of modified prototype
  • Development of pre-production dummy
  • Sale of approx. 9 pre-prodn dummies to finance
    development
  • Comprehensive evaluation of pre-prodn dummies
    around the world
  • Final development
  • Release of final design into public domain

8
Description of Dummy
advanced design
9
  • Anthropometry
  • 50th percentile male
  • overall height 1753 mm
  • seated height 911 mm
  • total mass 77,3 kg
  • Complies with UMTRI anthropometry
  • data for adult crash test dummies
  • Biofidelity
  • Goal Good to Excellent on ISO TR9790 scale

10
(No Transcript)
11
Thorax, Shoulder, Abdomen
12
Lumbar Spine
  • New concept for de-coupling of pelvis and thorax

13
Pelvis
14
Lower Extremities
  • Fully instrumented
  • Specific design

15
Upper Extremity
Half arm
Instrumented arm
16
Optional In-Dummy Data Acquisition
  • 7 DAS modules in dummy
  • 0ver 200 channels available
  • Signal
  • conditioning
  • moved to the sensor.
  • Distributed, modular
  • data acquisition.
  • Drastically reduced wire
  • bundles inside dummy.
  • Umbilical from dummy is for power, com, and
    trigger.

17
Biofidelity
  • Evaluation of prototype
  • All ISO TR 9790 tests performed
  • Testing by Transport Canada Medical College
    Wisconsin (sponsored NHTSA)
  • Tests on right and left side
  • 3 tests per side
  • Reported at 2001 Stapp Conference
  • WorldSID prototype Dummy Biomechanical
    Responses, Cesari et al.

18
ISO Rating (from TR 9790)
  • Response completely inside corridor B 10
  • Response within one corridor width outside
    corridor B 5
  • Response more than one corridor width outside
    corridor B 0
  • Mean score for each body segment
  • After weighting body segments, mean of body
    segments overall B
  • Excellent Biofidelity 8,6 B lt 10,0
  • Good Biofidelity 6,5 B lt 8,6
  • Fair Biofidelity 4,4 B lt 6,5
  • Marginal Biofidelity 2,6 B lt 4,4
  • Unacceptable Biofidelity 0,0 B lt 2,6

  • Excellent Biofidelity 8,6 B lt 10,0
  • Good Biofidelity 6,5 B lt 8,6
  • Fair Biofidelity 4,4 B lt 6,5

20
Summary of Results
  • Head good lateral biofidelity frontal response
is second priority but only minor modification
    to meet objective
  • Neck - difficult to meet both lateral and
    frontal response
  • requirements
  • - Response influenced by shoulder
  • More work to be done
  • Shoulder to be stiffened should easily meet
    objective
  • Thorax meets objective
  • Abdomen objective should be met after
    modification
  • Pelvis appears to be too stiff
  • - Check bone/flesh mass distribution
  • - Design may be incompatible with TR 9790 sled
    tests with padding

21
Repeatability
  • Biofidelity evaluation indicates good repeatablity

Durability
  • Over 100 biofidelity tests 2 full scale tests -
  • only minor damage

22
Summary
  • The performance of the WorldSID prototype dummy
    has been very promising
  • Development work is continuing
  • Final dummy release into public domain and launch
of production dummy expected on schedule in 2004
