What are Cells?

• Cells are the basic unit of structure and
  function of all living things.

Parts of Cells

• The main parts of all cells are
• - Cell Membrane
• A thin structure that surrounds a
  cell.
• - Cytoplasm
• All the material inside a cell except
  the nucleus.
• - Nucleus
• The control center of a cell.

Smaller parts of a cell

• Mitochondria
• - Structures in the cell that produce energy.
• Organelles
• - Structures in the cytoplasm that do
  special jobs.
• Ribosome
• - Structures that make proteins.
• Vacuoles
• - Storage spaces in the cell for food and
  wastes.
• Chromosomes
• - parts that determine the traits of living
  things.

Plant Cells vs. Animal Cells

• Plant and animal cells differ in 3 main ways.
• 1. Plant cells have a cell wall. This protects
  the plant and gives it shape and support.
• Plant cells contain chloroplasts. Chloroplasts
  contain chlorophyll, a green material that is
  important for the plants ability to produce food.
• Plant cells have 2 large vacuoles. Animal cells
  have many small vacuoles.
