Title: Videoconferencing and Collaboration Vocabulary Test

1
Videoconferencing and Collaboration Vocabulary
Test
2
Collaboration
  • Process of working together toward a common
purpose which is typically creative in nature.

3
Bandwidth
  • Refers to the capacity of your communications
network to exhange data between two nodes on the
network. It determines the amount of data that
can be transmitted through network channels in a
    given amount of time.

4
Bridge
  • Technology that connects disparate sites for
    videoconferencing. Also called an MCU.

5
BLOGS
  • (Combination of Web and Log) Blogs provide
commentary or news on a particular subject such
as food, politics, local news, technology tools
some function as more personal online diaries.

6
Codec
  • Short for coder-decoder, it is part of the
videoconferencing system that encodes or decodes
    audio and video signals.

7
Content Provider
  • Deliverer of content in synchronous or
    asynchronous time. Examples are teachers,
    museum, zoos, etc.

8
Desktop Video Conferencing
  • Real-time interactive video and voice
communication achieved with a webcam attached to
    a computer with Internet.

9
Distance Education
  • Learning that takes place over distance rather
than in a fixed classroom. This includes email,
    internet, videoconferencing and audio
conferencing. It cn be synchronous or asynchrous.

10
Electronic Field Trip
  • Virtual or simulated field trip that takes place
    in real-time electronically.

11
Far Sites
  • Also called Remote Sites, these are sites we
    communicate with over distance.

12
H.323
  • An umbrella recommendation from the ITU
    Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T)
that defines the protocols to provide
audio-visual communication sessions on any packet
    network.

13
IP
  • The Internet Protocol (IP) is data-oriented
protocol used for cummunicating data across a
    packet-switched internetwork.

14
ISDN
  • Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a
    circuit-switched telephone netowrk system,
designed to allow digital transmission of voice,
video, and text transmission between individual
    desktop videoconferencing systems and group
    (room) videoconferencing systems.

15
IVC
  • Interactive Videoconferencing. Two-way video and
audio communication supported by a computer
network or digital phone line that facililtates
interaction between people in a point to point or
    multipoint location.

16
Local Sites
  • The site from where you view the conference of a
    distance learning program.

17
MCU
  • Short for multipoint control unit. Also called
the bridge that is a computerized, automated
switching system that allows multiple sites to
    connect over videoconferencing.

18
Multi-Point Video Conference
  • Videoconferencing between more than two sites.

19
Peripheral
  • An external device such as a printer, scanner,
    whiteboard, or document camera.

20
PIP
  • Picture in a picture. Shows an inset of the
local site (or remote site) simultaneously during
    a videoconference.

21
Point to Point
  • One site to one site videoconference. Does not
require a bridge unless the sites are connecting
in different ways (such as IP to ISDN).

22
Synchronous Communication
  • Two-way interaction between teacher and student
    in real time.

23
Streaming Video
  • Multimedia that is continuously received by, and
normally displayed to, the end-user while it is
    being delivered by the provider.

24
Telecommunications
  • The transmission of signals over a distance for
    the purpose of communication.

25
Test Call
  • Should be carried out between the content
provider and teacher to ensure a more reliable vc
    experience.

26
VOIP
  • Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP,
    IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband
telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over
Broadband is the routing of voice conversations
over the Internet or through any other IP-based
    network.

27
Virtual Classroom
  • An electronic classroom consisting of off-site
members in one or several locations where
instruction involves the use of synchronous and
    asynchronous tools.

28
Web 2.0
  • A phrase coined by OReilly Media in 2003 and
popularized by the first Web 2.0 conference in
2004, refers to a perceived second generation of
web-based communities and hosted servicessuch as
social networking sites, wikis and blogswhich
    facilitate collaboration and sharing between
users. Web 2.0 tools not only allow student to
create and engage with each other-but that other
connections and collaborations would make a good
    project even better.

29
Wikis
  • A web application designed to allow multiple
authors to add, remove, and edit content. The
multiple author capability of wikis them
effective tools for mass collaborative authoring.

30
Del.icio.us
  • Del.icio.us is one of many social bookmarking
    programs. Del.icio.us gives you a web-based
bookmarking area that is accessible from any
    computer anywhere anytime.

31
ooVoo
  • Free desktop videoconferencing application.

32
PBWIKI
  • Peanut Butter Wiki. A protected wiki environment
for teachers and students that promotes
    collaboration.

33
eBoard
  • Web based bulletin board for posting of any and
all information related to a project, class, etc.

34
VoiceThread
  • A Voicethread allows every child in a class to
record audio commentary about ideas and
experiences that are important to them.  Students
can narrate stories that they created or from
snapshots or any other picture source.
