  • The following lessons show students how to
    compute area using common situations.
  • Independent activities are supplied at the
    close of the lesson.
  • Click mouse to proceed through activities.
  • Students will need journals or paper and
    pencils for follow up activities.

Tom wanted to buy a new rug for the living room.
He carefully measured the length and width of the
room and found it to be 12 feet by 20 feet. He
took a piece of graph paper and made a drawing of
the room. Each square on the paper represented a
square foot of the floor.
5
Tom then counted all the squares on his graph
paper and found out that his living room has an
area of 240 square feet. A much faster way would
have been for Tom to multiply the length times
the width 20 X 12 240 square feet.
Dont forgetThe answer to an area problem is
always in square units.( inches, feet, yards, etc)
6
The playground needs a new coating of asphalt.
The maintenance department must figure the area
of the playground so they will know how much
asphalt to order. The playground measures 40
yards by 60 yards. If they order enough asphalt
to cover 2350 square yards of playground, will
they have enough?
7
How will you find the answer? These numbers are
too large to use graph paper. What was that
short-cut multiplication method?
8
Multiply length X width 40 yards X 60 yards
2400 square yards So, 2350 square yards of
asphalt would not be enough.
9
20 X 60 2400 sq.
yard of asphalt

Terry wants to put new floor tile in this
classroom. The tiles are one foot square. How
many will he need? In his drawing, each square is
a square foot.
Hall door
Sink area
11
The room has an irregular shape which makes it
hard to multiply length times width to get the
area. However, after examining the drawing, Terry
notices how some of the shapes can be combined to
make a square.
12
If he combines the two triangular shapes he will
get another square. It can be added to the side
that has two square to make a complete side. Now
his shape is four feet by three feet. The area
is 4 X 3 12 square feet.
13
  • In your journal or on a piece of paper, find the
area answer to the following problems.
  • 1. A room that has a length of 28 feet and a
width of 53 feet. What is the area?
  • 2. I need to buy wall paper for a wall that is 8
feet high and 12 feet wide. I need how many sq.
    ft.?
  • I want to put sod on my lawn and it looks like
this. Each square on the drawing equals one sq.
yard. How many square yards of sod will I need?

14
  • ANSWER PAGE
  • 28 feet X 53 feet 1484 square feet
  • 8 feet X 12 feet 96 square feet of
    wallpaper.
  • after combining the two triangular shapes to be
one whole square, the is 3 X 9 27 square feet
    of sod
