Metadata planes
An OpenURL Resolver allows users access to an
extended service plane.
See SFX demonstration
5
Resource List Interoperability
  • Specifications for the exchange of structured
metadata between systems that provide resources
on the one hand and those that harvest and
organize those resources for pedagogic purposes
    on the other
  • Deliverables
  • RLI Information Model Document
  • RLI Binding Document A Resources List XML
    binding will be defined.
  • RLI Best Practices Document The best practices
    will include the following
  • Definition of transport protocols. It is
expected that a DRI/Web Services model will be
    used.
  • System behaviors. These will be defined in a
    WSDL binding.
  • Item-specific association of Resources within
    Library Systems to Resources Lists.
  • RLI Conformance Document Conformance with the
RLI spec will be clearly defined in a separate
    document.

Learning Objects and Learning Object Metadata

Prospects for the future
  • Investigate how ParaTools could be used to
populate Resource XML instance documents that
    conform to new IMS standards
  • Build more sophisticated SOAP messaging between
OpenURL Resolver and Digital Object Repositories,
according to IMS DRI standards i.e. XQuery and
    SOAP
  • Investigate how Shibboleth or an OKI service
definition could be used to authenticate user
    access
  • Investigate how real time payment could be
built into architecture, (maybe exchange of
    credits or acknowledgement).
  • Integrate novel Semantic Web ideas e.g. digital
    repository metadata visualisation

Functional Components of the Semantic Web
9
Key issues
  • Identifiers for Learning Objects
  • Digital Rights Management
  • Cultural change BUILDING E-LEARNING COMMUNITIES
    (see Learning Design)

Learning more about the OLIVE Project
  • Two papers will be produced late August
  • A report that explains exactly what weve done on
the OLIVE project with enough details for anyone
to continue developing the types of services
    weve started creating.
  • 'The Appropriate Copy Problem and Learning
    Objects problems and prospects
