Recognize this?
Its called an organizational life cycle and its
message is clear make good decisions or
fail. And failure is an option.
3
Recognize these?
Indeed consider this
4
Thats why we need to think AND act
STRATEGICALLY.
Every decision we make has an impact now and
later.
As leadership we want the decisions we make to
work today, and we want them to pay dividends for
tomorrow.
5
  • So what is strategic planning?
  • It is a process designed to position an
  • organization to invest its resources to
  • take advantage of the future.

6
We understand better than ever that planning is
like standing on a beach.
A wave approaches.
Dig in your heels? Swim into it? Run?

8
That prediction became
this reality.
9
Maybe thats why the motto of the U.S. Coast
Guard is
Always ready!
10
The key here is to think and ACT strategically.
Planning is not about writing a plan.
Planning is about results.
11
How do you build a strategic plan?
Determine where you are. Establish where you
want to go. Set the course for where you want
to go and look for obstacles and aids.
12
Key Strategic Questions What must we do?
MISSION What do we want to do?
VISION What can we do?
BUDGET Does it make sense? Does it make a
difference?
13
  • What makes something strategic?
  • Four commonsense aphorisms
  • Hole in the bottom of the boat.
  • Opportunity knocks but once.
  • A stitch in time saves nine.
  • The early bird catches the worm.

14
If you have a mission, vision and forecast of the
future. You can build a plan by identifying two
things.
The GOALS you need to achieve,
The CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS that could affect
your ability to achieve those goals.
15
It works like this.
The vision leads To growth and improvement
the mission sustains
today tomorrow
16
Turning the crank everyday is our mission.
17
VISION is about winning championships.
18
But, DONT forget those CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS!

Assumption If we are what our core purpose
says we are An association designed to help our
members succeed, Then we must change with
changes in our members needs.
Fact most organizations are Functionally
obsolete (designed to meet the needs of a
disappearing generation), Organizationally
ineffective (saddled with decision- making
processes reflecting 20th, maybe 19th C practice.
