Operation Thistle Seeds of Despair Beyond the
buckling cement of a long-forgotten industrial
park, in the deep shadows of a polluted
swamp, a weed grew.
10
A mutating, prickly, twisted little thistle with
a twisted plan... Almost no light
penetrated this place and everything grew
black,
11
cold and slimy except the thistle. He
grew more intelligent, more cunning.
12
No longer content to go unnoticed, the time
had come for Dr. Thistle's plan to grow...

Service Learning
I enjoy teaching the smaller kids what we have
learned. Its almost like being a big brother to
them.
24
I enjoyed JMG very much. It is the best science
class I have ever had. I did things I enjoy
instead of school work. Instead we taught little
kids, gardened, composted, and did activities.

Root Zone Water Police
(p135)
1. Run the sprinklers for 15 minutes.
2. Twenty-four hours later, dig up ashovelful of
soil to measure the number of inches deep the
soil is moistened.
3. Divide 90 by the depth in inches
of the moistened soil.
Students protect water and serve their community
byproviding customized info about a lawns
specific water needs
38
How does work?! Students determine
a simple ratio
X inches(tested depth of moisture) 15
minutes(number of minutes watered)
6 inches(ideal depth of moisture) Y
minutes(number of minutes that area should be
watered)
