A wall-breaking ceremony was held on April 6,
2009 to kick-off the Washington Dental Service
Building for Early Childhood Oral Health (WDS
ECOH) project. Surprisingly, it was a bright and
beautiful spring day. Located at Building 25 in
Magnusson Park, the scope consists of complete
interior construction and the installation of
fixtures, furnishings, and equipment for 28,050
gross square feet on 4 levels (including
basement). The Art Deco building is an historic
structure that served as the administration
building and Tower operations for the former
Sandpoint Naval Air Station. The scheduled move
in date is September 2010.

5Getting Ready
6- In November 2007, with the help of a 5 million
gift from the Washington Dental Service and the
Washington Dental Service Foundation, the UW
School of Dentistry and Seattle Childrens
Hospital embarked on a new venture to ensure that
the regions children receive the highest quality
oral health care at an early age when disease can
be prevented. Representatives from these
partners were present at the event. While
representative partners used golden sledge
hammers to break some holes in the remaining
walls, Martha J. Somerman, Dean of the School of
Dentistry, had the honors of breaking down one of
the walls using a small bobcat for the ceremony.

9Thumbs up!
10- The Washington Dental Service Building for Early
Childhood Oral Health (ECOH), will double the
capacity of the pediatric dental programs at both
institutions, providing an estimated 30,000
pediatric dental visits per year for healthy
children and those with urgent or special needs.
Watch for Ribbon-Cutting in September 2010!
