  cyclone related tornadoes

• The preferred quadrant" for tornado occurrence
  can be seen in the figure to the right
• The vast majority of tornadoes occur in the
  right front quadrant (between 350 and 120
  degrees) with respect to the motion of the
  tropical system.
• Shear is maximized in the front and right
  quadrants with respect to the motion of the
  tropical system. Increased convergence and
  frictional contributions play a role.

Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes within the WFO Raleigh
CWA

• Locklear (2008) in a study of severe weather and
  tornadoes across WFO Raleighs (RAH) CWA during
  the period of 1950 to 2005 found that
• Of the 284 tornadoes that were reported in
  Raleighs CWA, 48 tornadoes (17) were associated
  with tropical systems or their remnants. Of
  these, almost all (96) were classified as weak
  (F0-F1) tornadoes.
• Tropical cyclones that produce tornadoes in the
  WFO Raleigh CWA can make landfall anywhere along
  the Gulf Coast states, the Southeast, or directly
  on the North Carolina coast.
