The Walkman Story
  • Ibuka came into his office one day with a
portable stereo tape recorder and a pair of
standard headphones. He was unhappy and
complained about the weight of the system.
  • He ordered his engineers to strip out the
recording circuit and the speaker and replace
them with a stereo amplifier. He also wanted
    very lightweight headphones.
  • Marketing people were unenthusiastic. They said
it wouldnt sell. However, from the very
beginning the Walkman was a runaway success,
despite having to have tailored shirts roller
    skates!
  • Launch of Walkman took place in 1979. Twenty
million sold in the first eight years.
